Obituaries Tuesday November 20th
Walter B. Reitz D.C., 80, of Burlington, died at 1:33 pm Sunday, November 18, 2012, at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.
Born June 7, 1932, at the Jefferson County Hospital in Brookfield, PA, he was the son of Roy B. and Florence Thomas Reitz. On December 15, 1984, he married Barbara Bennett Balbinot at the First United Methodist Church in Fort Madison. He had previously been married to Marty V. Shovestull (Swailes).
Walter had worked as a grid engineer at Sylvannia Electric. After the closing of Sylvannia, he returned to school and graduated from Palmer Chiropractor College in Davenport in 1972. He began his own chiropractic practice, where he worked until his retirement.
He was a graduate of Brookfield High School.
He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving during the Korean War era from 1953 until 1955.
Since moving to Burlington, Barb and Walt had attended Spring Grove United Methodist Church and Grace United Methodist Church. He was a member of Tri-State Gun Club, Loyal Order of Moose, Fraternal Order of Eagles, Claypoole Lodge 13, and North Lee Co. Foster Care Review Board. He enjoyed golfing with friends, spending time on the computer, gardening, reading books, especially John Grisham books, watching western movies and John Wayne movies. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He will be remembered by family, friends and patients as a warm, caring and sometimes funny person.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Balbinot-Reitz of Burlington; two sons, Clayton S. Reitz of Wayland, and W. Burton Reitz II of Burlington; two daughters, Dianna (Jim) Murray of West Burlington, and Denise (Dutch) Deitrick of Mediapolis; one step-son, Brent (Judy) Balbinot of Coralville; one step-daughter, Tracee (Balbinot) Roberts of Fort Madison; six grandchildren, Kendra (Dustin) Alter of Moorhead, KY, Kristen Murray of West Burlington, Adam M. Reitz and Steven J. Reitz, both of Olds, Sarah J. Reitz and Elizabeth A. Reitz, both of Wayland; and several nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Marion Moore and one infant son, Dale Lee.
As per Walter’s request, cremation has been accorded.
Visitation will be from 8:00 AM until 8:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM Tuesday, November 20, 2012 at Thielen Funeral Home. Full military honors will be rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard at 5:30 PM Tuesday, November 20, 2012 at Thielen Funeral Home.
The Graveside Committal Service for Dr. Reitz will be 10:00 AM Wednesday, November 21, 2012, at Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery with Rev. Trevor Davis officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for Spring Grove United Methodist Church, Grace United Methodist Church, the Des Moines County Humane Society, or the charity of your choice.
