Obituaries January 2nd
Daniel “Rags” Martin Nelson, 78, of Burlington, died at 1:05 PM Saturday, December 29, 2012, at his home.
Born March 16, 1934, in South Dakota, he was the son of Rev. J. E. and Estel Nelson. On December 23, 1955, he married Sherry Lee Meyer in Burlington.
Dan worked for Means Clean Towel Service for 30 years and then for the City of Burlington for 21 years.
He was of the Lutheran faith. He enjoyed duck, deer, and turkey hunting. He loved polka music and attending polka fests. He spent countless hours with his second family at Jerry’s Main Lunch. He was an avid Chicago Bears and Iowa Hawkeyes fan. He also loved mushroom hunting, spending time at his cabin, and fishing on the river.
Survivors include his wife, Sherry; two sons, Jay (Becky) Nelson, and Bryan (Becky) Nelson, both of Burlington; one daughter, Kim (Darren) Grimshaw of Burlington; three grandchildren, Tyler Nelson, Breann Nelson, and Blake (Ashley) Nelson; one great-grandchild on the way; one step-brother, Ed Nelson of Volga, SD; one step-sister, Martha Swenson of Dallas, TX three sisters, Jean, Janet, and Joyce, all of California; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Cremation has been entrusted to Thielen Crematory.
Visitation will be from 8:00 AM until 8:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM Wednesday, January 2, 2013, at Thielen Funeral Home.
Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery at a later date.
A memorial has been established.

C. Keith Price, 90, of Burlington, died at 4:05 PM, Saturday, December 29, 2012, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.
Born June 26, 1922, in Burlington, he was the son of Jesse Guy and Iva Fern Price. On June 1, 1947, he married Bertha M.L. Larkins in Burlington.
Keith was employed for 43 years as a Web Pressman with The Burlington Hawk Eye. He retired in 1982.
He was a 1941 graduate of Burlington High School.
He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving during WWII in the European Theatre.
He was an avid fisherman.
Survivors include his wife, Bertha; one daughter, Susan Kay (Mike Hamilton) Price of Des Moines; and one niece, Lynn (Jack) Lawson and one nephew, Larry (Brenda) Larkins.
He was preceded in death by his son Scott Price, his parents and one brother.
Cremation has been entrusted to Thielen Crematory.
Visitation will be from 9:00 AM until 10:00 AM Wednesday, January 2, 2013 at Thielen Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends.
The memorial service for Mr. Price will be 10:00 AM Wednesday, January 2, 2013, at Thielen Funeral Home with Chaplain Randy Gearhart officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.
A memorial has been established for the Iowa Department for the Blind, Library Services in Des Moines, Iowa.

Gary Davis, 65, of New London, died Sunday, December 30, 2012 at the University of Iowa Hospitals, Iowa City. Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday at Elliott Chapel, New London. The family will receive friends from 11 to 1 and 4 to 6 p.m. There will be no formal services and cremation will be accorded following the visitation. A memorial has been established for the Oakland Mills Nature Center.
Floyd Carl Teske, 106, of Burlington, died at 2:18 AM Monday, December 31, 2012, at The Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown.
Born July 10, 1906, at home, in Pleasant Township, Winneshiek County, Iowa he was the son of August and Emma Fisher Teske. On February 14, 1947, he married Helen Holze in Burlington. She died October 21, 1979.
Following Floyd’s return to the states from military service, he attended Mortuary School in Des Moines and then came to Burlington to work at Giles Funeral Home as a licensed funeral director.
He graduated from Decorah High School and lived in Winneshiek County until entering the military.
He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving during World War II from 1942 until 1945 in the European theater. He was a dental technician and assisted in the repatriation of departed soldiers. He earned Silver and Bronze Battle Stars in the European theater. Prior to Floyd’s death, he was honored as the oldest living veteran in the state of Iowa.
Floyd was active in the Macomb fellowship of the Worldwide Church of God. He believed in the Holy Scriptures and had put his faith in Christ for salvation. He enjoyed studying the Scriptures and reading newspapers until his sight failed. He sharpened his eloquent speaking skills by being a member of the Toastmasters Club. Though he never owned a car or TV, he was a very contented man who remained active walking to the library and for groceries well into his 90s.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Arthur, and one sister, Sadie.
There are no family survivors. He particularly appreciated his church family and then the workers at the Iowa Veterans Home.
The funeral service for Mr. Teske will be 10:00 AM., Thursday, January 3, 2013, at Thielen Funeral Home with Rev. Dean Graber officiating and full military honors rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

Ruth Winifred Bliss Age: 90 resident of: Burlington, Iowa

Survivors: She is survived by one daughter, Janice (John) Mehaffy of Burlington, Iowa; five grandchildren, Debra Lynn (Paul) Ervin, Priscilla Ann (Matt) Carter, James David (Penny) Mehaffy, Teri Lynn (Christopher) Nordstrom and Therese Ann (DeWayne) Cross; twelve great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Frieda Smith of Kingsland, Georgia; daughter-in-law, Carolyn Bliss; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services: No formal services are planned.
Interment: Interment of ashes will be at a later date.

D. LaVon Ellis, 80, of Dallas City, IL passed away Monday, December 31, 2012 at 5:10 PM at his home.
He was born June 9, 1932 near Raritan, IL, the son of Loyd and Hallie Creola Melbourn Ellis. On March 31, 1955 he married June E. Zern in Carthage, IL.
Mr. Ellis was a 1950 graduate of the Terre Haute, IL High School. He was a veteran of the Korean War, having served with the US Air Force from 1952 – 1956. He worked for the Iowa Army Ammunitions Plant for 35 years, retiring in 1993. He was a lifetime member of the VFW. LaVon served on the Dallas City Fire Department and the City Council for many years.
He is survived by his wife, one daughter, Denise (Larry) Bland of Quincy, IL and two grandsons, Konnor and Parker Bland.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, James Ellis and one sister, Patsy Shappell.
Services will be held at 2:00 PMThursday, January 3, 2013 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in DallasCity, with Rev. Will Fowler officiating. Military Rites will be conducted by the Dallas City American Legion. A private family burial will be held at a later date in HarrisCemetery near DallasCity.
