Francis “Frank” C. Umthun, age 76 of Mediapolis, died Monday January 7, 2013 at his home. The son of Steve and Verona (Holtkamp) Umthun, he was born January 8, 1936 at Burlington. On October 24, 1959 he married Mary Ann Fedler at West Point, Iowa. He attended EagleGroveHigh School. He has been employed with the family business of Umthun Trucking his entire life. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Dodgeville and was a Knights of Columbus member.
Survivors include: his wife Mary Ann of Mediapolis; three daughters; Lisa and John Wiegel of Illinois City, Illinois; Susan and Rex Krueger of Muscatine, Iowa; Becky and Bill Miller of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; nine grandchildren; two brothers, Joe Umthun of Clarion, Iowa and Mark Umthun of Eagle Grove, Iowa; two sisters, Bernadette Jorgensen of Omaha, Nebraska and Donna Culmer of Searcy, Arkansas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a granddaughter, four sisters and one brother.
The funeral service will be held Friday January 11, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Dodgeville, with Father David Steinle officiating; interment will follow in St Mary’s Cemetery.
Friends may call on Thursday from 2-7:00 p.m. at Hagele and Honts Funeral Home in Mediapolis, where the family will meet with friends from 4-7:00 p.m.
Memorials have been established for the Mediapolis Ambulance Service, GreatRiver Hospice, and St. Mary’s DodgevilleCemetery Association.
William B. Riffel, 90, of Burlington, died at 7:37 AM Monday, January 7, 2013, at his home.
Born June 23, 1922, in West Burlington, he was the son of William Joseph and Theresa Mary Beckman Riffel. On September 28, 1951, he married Doris Jean Heckenburg in West Burlington, Iowa. She died August 5, 2007.
Bill had been employed at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant with A.E.C. for 32 years. He retired in 1975. He had also worked with the Burlington School System for eight years.
He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving during WWII in Europe, Africa, Normandy, and Germany from 1943 until 1946. He was at Normandy on D-Day. He had received a Bronze Star.
He was a member of SS. Mary & Patrick Catholic Church, West Burlington. He was a member of the Eagles Burlington Aerie #150, Society of First Division Big Red One, VFW Post 10102, and the American Legion Post 52. He was an avid sports fan who enjoyed watching the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, St. Louis Cardinals, and the Iowa Hawkeyes. Bill also enjoyed gardening and had played semi-pro baseball. One of Bill’s passions was Purple Martin houses that he and his neighbors enjoyed.
Survivors include three sisters, Frances Berendsen of Santa Barbara, CA, Loretta Prior of Davenport, IA, and Helen Schmeiser of Burlington; and many loving nieces and nephews.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Antoinette “Toni” and two brothers, Clarence and Joseph.
Visitation will be from noon until 8:00 PM with the family to receive friends following a 5:00 PM Rosary Service until 8:00 PM Wednesday, January 9, 2013 at Thielen Funeral Home. Following the visitation, cremation will be entrusted to Thielen Crematory.
The Memorial Mass of the Resurrection for Mr. Riffel will be 10:00 AM Thursday, January 10, 2013, at SS. Mary and Patrick Catholic Church, West Burlington, with Rev. Father Bruce A. DeRammelaere as the Celebrant and full military honors rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard. Music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A time of food and fellowship will be held in SS. Mary & Patrick’s Parish Center following the burial.
Memorials have been established for Des Moines County Animal Shelter, Notre Dame Foundation, and SS. Mary & Patrick Catholic Church, West Burlington.

Lois Marie Siverly, 85, of Burlington, died at 11:00 am Sunday, January 6, 2013, at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.
Born January 10, 1927, in Elizabethville, PA, she was the daughter of Herbert A. and Margaret Irene Snyder Chubb. On June 29, 1961, she married Earl Holland Siverly in Burlington. September 29, 1966
She was a housewife.
She attended Elizabethville High School, graduating in 1944.
She was a U.S. Veteran, serving during the from until .
She was an avid reader, loved flowers, and pets were her special friends.
Survivors include son, Michael William (Lori) Malone of Burlington, IA, daughter, Marlis Jean Siverly of Burlington, IA, step-daughter, Janet Mayo of Burlington, IA, step-daughter, Judy Dee of Watersville, IA, six step-grandchildren, seven step-great-grandchildren, and one niece and nephew.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister Leonora Chubb, and one brother Ernest Chubb.
Cremation has been entrusted to Thielen Crematory.
