Mrs. Esther Margareth Schroder, 93, of New London, died Tuesday, January 22, 2013 at Henry County Health Center.  Arrangements are pending at Elliott Chapel, New London.

 

Eugene William “Bill” Ertz, 86, of Burlington, died at 1:45 AM Tuesday, January 22, 2013, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

 

Born September 26, 1926, in Burlington, he was the son of Frederick and Helen Logan Ertz. On April 2, 1951, he married Georgiana Stelle in Burlington. She died October 3, 2008.

 

Bill worked as a dispatcher and driver for the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant for 40 years. 

 

He attended Burlington Catholic Schools. 

 

He was a U.S. Navy Veteran, serving during the World War II from October 22, 1944 until June 23, 1946.

 

He was a member of SS. Mary and Patrick Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus 4th Degree Mackin Assembly #261. He was a past member of the Moose Lodge, Eagles, and Elks. He enjoyed western and old fashion country music, yard work, and going to Branson. He was a fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes and St. Louis Cardinals. He enjoyed helping his children with home improvements. He  enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s events, and especially loved being with his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

 

Survivors include four sons, Mahlon (Alice) Webb of Swoope, VA, Dan Ertz of Burlington,  Tom (Cathy) Ertz of Matthews, NC, and Tony Ertz of Burlington; four daughters, Judy Andries of Burlington, Barbara (Dennis) Elmore of West Burlington, Mary (Tom Ostergren) Brueck and Nancy (Steve) Brueck both of Burlington; one daughter-in-law, Jeanne Ertz of Burlington; 21 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; one brother, John M. Ertz of Ashville, NC; one sister, Margaret E. Cullen of Newark, DE; and numerous nieces and nephews.

 

Besides his wife he was preceded in death by one son, Andy Ertz, his parents, three brothers, Roy Ertz, Warren Ertz, and Paul Ertz.

 

Visitation will be from 8:00 AM until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Thursday, January 24, 2013 at Thielen Funeral Home.

 

The Funeral Mass of the Resurrection for Mr. Ertz will be 10:00 AM Friday, January 25, 2013, at SS. Mary and Patrick Catholic Church, West Burlington with Rev. Father David G. Steinle as the Celebrant and full military honors rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard.    Music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir.  Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery.  A time of food and fellowship will be held in SS. Mary & Patrick’s Parish Center following the burial.

 

Memorials have been established for the Great River Hospice House and Burlington Notre Dame “Raising the Roof” Fund.
