Pittsfield’s Zoe Theatre Makes National Register

PITTSFIELD, Ill. (AP) — The Zoe Theatre in western Illinois is now on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Quincy Herald-Whig reports that Monday’s announcement recognizes work by the Zoe Preservation Society and the city of Pittsfield to preserve the historic theater.

The National Register is the official list of the country’s historic places worthy of preservation. It’s part of a national program to support efforts to protect America’s historic and archaeological resources.

The Zoe opened as a theater in September 1951. It closed in the 1980s and was taken over by the city in 2004. Activists began efforts to restore the art deco-styled building in 2008.

Pittsfield Economic Development Director Bill McCartney says the listing protects the Zoe from being demolished and should spur more preservation work.
