WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama will look from support from the public and law enforcement community today when he visits Minneapolis to push for his gun control proposals.

Obama faces a tough fight on Capitol Hill when it comes to a ban on assault weapons and universal background checks for gun buyers.

Minnesota recently has taken steps to tackle gun violence, including a push for stricter background checks.

Obama’s visit to the Minneapolis Police Department’s Special Operations Center marks the first time he’s campaigning on his controversial proposals outside of Washington.
