Ada Jean Kline, age 90, of Mediapolis, died Monday morning, February 11, 2013, at the Prairie Ridge Care and Rehab in Mediapolis. The daughter of William Evans and Dorothy Blake McClure, she was born on February 8, 1923 in Burlington. She married Hubert H. Kline on August 8, 1959 in Nashua. He preceded her in death on October 5, 1999.
Ada Jean graduated from Mediapolis High School in 1940 and from Iowa State University in 1944 with a degree in Dietetics. She worked as a hospital dietician and a dietary consultant for the Mediapolis Care Center. She also worked in the family business of Kline’s True Value Store.
She was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church in Mediapolis, the Presbyterian Women’s Association and Young at Heart, the Grace Stewart King’s Daughters, and the American Dietetics Association.
Her family includes two sons, Kirk & Sue Kline and Kerry & Angie Kline both of Mediapolis; two daughters, Kim & John Gozzo of Redlands, California and Kelli & Dean Haerther of Atkins; eight grandchildren, Krystal Fedoris, Jared Kline, Morgan Gozzo, Jake Gozzo, Blake Kline, Aaron Kline, Zach Haerther, and Ben Haerther; and two great grandchildren, Anna and Joseph Fedoris. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Hubert; and a brother, William McClure.
The funeral service for Ada Jean Kline will be held at 10:30 AM on Thursday, February 14, 2013, at the First United Presbyterian Church in Mediapolis with Pastor Dan Baker officiating. Burial will follow at the Kossuth Cemetery,
Friends may call from 2:00 to 8:00 PM on Wednesday at the Hagele and Honts Funeral Home in Mediapolis where the family will meet friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.
A Memorial Fund has been established for the benefit of the First United Presbyterian Church and the Great River Hospice.
Ann Elizabeth White, 87, of Burlington, died at 11:45 AM Monday, February 11, 2013, at the Prairie Ridge Care & Rehabilitation in Mediapolis. Arrangements are pending at the Thielen Funeral Home & Crematory.
Henry L. Hirsch, 97, of Weston, Massachusetts, formerly of Burlington, died at Sunrise Assisted Living, Weston, Massachusetts on Thursday, February 07, 2013.
Born on December 4, 1915 in Burlington, Iowa, he was the son of Edward Louis and Gertrude Nirdlinger Hirsch. He married Dorothy Rose Smalls on July 6, 1941 in Des Moines, Iowa. She died on August 11, 2002.
Henry graduated from Burlington High School, Burlington Junior College, Grinnell College and Iowa Law School with a B.A. in Law. He served in the U.S. Army as Captain in World War II. Henry practiced law for many years in the Burlington area and was a partner in Hirsch, Adams, Krekel, Putman and Cahill. He retired from law practice May 1, 1996.
Henry was a member of Kiwanis, Burlington Golf Club, Des Moines Bar Association, Iowa State Bar Association, American Bar Association, Temple Israel (Burlington), and Temple Shalom (Galesburg). Henry enjoyed playing golf and bridge, traveling and watching sports; in addition to his family, friends and many civic activities.
Henry served as President and Director of the Burlington Chamber of Commerce; Director of Burlington Area Development Corp.; President and Director of Burlington Medical Center; Member and Chairman of Burlington Planning and Zoning Commission; President and Director of Burlington United Way; President and Board Member of Burlington Kiwanis Club; President and Secretary of Des Moines County Bar Association; Director of the YMCA; Mercy Hospital Advisory Board Member; Salvation Army Advisory Board Member; President and Director of Temple Israel; Director of Des Moines County Mental Health Association; Director of Burlington Chapter Red Cross; and Director of Burlington Civic Music Association.
He is survived by one son, Harold E. Hirsch and his wife, Lana of Washington, D.C.; one daughter, Barbara H. Mitchell and her husband, Marc of Weston, Massachusetts; one granddaughter, Beth Mitchell and her husband, Jesse Appelman of New York, New York; and one grandson, Jason Mitchell of New York, New York.
He was preceded in death by his wife and parents.
Funeral services for Henry L. Hirsch will be held in Prugh’s Chapel, Burlington, Iowa, on Thursday, February 14, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. Rabbi Henry Jay Karp will officiate. Interment will be in Burlington Jewish Cemetery, Burlington, Iowa.
