Dorothea Maxine Hirstine, 100, of Burlington, died at Great River Klein Center, early Wednesday morning, March 6, 2013.
Born on August 27, 1912 in Basco, Illinois, she was the daughter of Milton M. and Blanche E. Klous Richardson. She married Frank E. Hirstine on November 1, 1929 in Burlington, Iowa. He died on October 8, 1985.
Dorothea was a homemaker. She was a member Eastern Star, Golden Rule and King’s Daughters. She enjoyed ceramics, doll making and all sewing crafts. She was of the Baptist faith.
She is survived by one son, Gary F. Hirstine of Kerrville, Texas; one sister, Betty (Warren) Robertson of Springfield, Missouri; two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank; her parents; one daughter, Marijo Hirstine; and one sister, Madeline Murphy.
The Memorial Service for Dorothea Maxine Hirstine will be held at Klein’s Chapel
on Friday, March 8, 2013 at 10:00 a.m.. Chaplain David Plooster will officiate.
Interment will be in Oakland Cemetery, Ft. Madison, Iowa at a later date.

Julia Ann Crowder, 74, died at her home in Farmington, Iowa, on Monday, March 4, 2013.
Born on October 21, 1938 in Aitkin, Minnesota, she was the daughter of Victor Kenneth and Mildred Holt Newstrom. She married John P. Crowder on March 20, 1960 in Aitkin, Minnesota.
Julia was a graduate of St. Luke’s Nursing School, Duluth, Minnesota and Open Bible College, Des Moines, Iowa. She traveled with her husband while he was stationed in the military bases of Germany, Taiwan, Hawaii and several others in the United States. Julia was a devoted mother and born again Christian. She loved the Lord Jesus Christ with all her heart and soul while living and went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ upon passing.
She was a member of Bible Baptist Church, Kahoka, Missiouri.
She is survived by her husband, John Crowder; two daughters, Rebecca J. Crowder of Eldon, Iowa and Leah M. Lestina of Bensenville, Illinois; two sons, Joseph L. Crowder of Manistique, Michigan and Stephen J. Crowder of Katy, Texas; fifteen grandchildren; one brother, Bruce Newstrom of St. Cloud, Minnesota; one sister, Janice Boyd of Onamia, Minnesota; and sister-in-law, Barbara Jean Bright of Burlington, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Kenney.
Funeral services for Julia Crowder will be held on Tuesday, March 12, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. at Prugh’s Chapel. Pastor Glen Yoder will officiate. Interment will be in Keokuk National Cemetery, Keokuk, Iowa. The family will receive friends one prior to the service. A memorial has been established in memory of Julia Ann Crowder. Keith Lee Messer, age 63, of Wapello, died Tuesday, March 5, 2013, at his residence. The son of Ralph and Gladys Tisor Messer, he was born on January 8, 1950 in Muscatine.
He graduated from Wapello High School in 1968 and served in the US Army during the Vietnam War. He had worked as a Salesman for Five Flags Chemical Company and more recently had owned and operated the Hot Shot Pool Hall in Wapello for 12 years.
He was a member of the VFW Glenn Allen Post 5166 of Wapello and various Pool Leagues. He not only enjoyed playing pool, but also enjoyed poker, bowling, baseball, and other sports as he was an avid sports fan including that of the Cubs.
His family includes a daughter, Jackie & Philip Denning of Houghton; a son, Bill & Brandy Messer of Denmark; 7 grandchildren; 1 great grandson; two brothers, Kenneth Messer of Wapello and Donald & Linda Messer of Wapello; and two sisters, Barbara & David Reid of Letts and Nancy Stephens of Wapello.
He was preceded by his parents and 2 nephews.
A Celebration of Life Gathering will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, March 9, 2013, at the Sand Bar in Wapello.
A memorial fund has been established.
The Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello is providing the arrangements.

Funeral Mass: for John Lorenz Collins will be held on Saturday, March 9, 2013 at 9:30 a.m. at St. Paul Catholic Church, Burlington, Iowa. Fr. Bruce DeRammelaere will be the Celebrant. Music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir.
Interment: Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery
Other arrangements: The family will receive friends on Friday evening from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. at Prugh’s Chapel. A memorial has been established for the Des Moines County Historical Society Endowment.
