NW Illinois Gas Station Sells $50-Million Powerball Ticket

FREEPORT, Ill. (AP) — Lottery officials say a ticket sold at a Freeport gas station won the most recent $50 million Powerball jackpot.

The ticket was the sole winner of Saturday’s drawing.

A spokeswoman for the Illinois Lottery tells The (Freeport) Journal-Standard that the jackpot marks only the second time a multimillion dollar winning Powerball ticket has been sold in the state.

Powerball’s played in 41 other states as well as Washington, D.C.

The winner, who picked the numbers at random on a $2 ticket, hasn’t come forward.

Meanwhile, Freeport’s mayor says he hopes the winner’s local and isn’t someone who was passing through the northern Illinois community.

The gas station’s owner, Johnson Oil Co., will get about $500,000 for selling the winning ticket.
