Building Under Construction in India Collapses; More than 40 Perish

MUMBAI, India (AP) — Rescue workers with sledgehammers, gasoline-powered saws and hydraulic jacks continue their struggle to break through a tower of rubble in a search for possible survivors of a building collapse in India that has killed at least 41 people.

The building which fell in a suburb of India’s financial capital, Mumbai, was being constructed illegally and was already partially occupied. Authorities say more than 50 people were injured.

Officials say more than 20 people are missing and three sandwiched floors of the building must still be searched.

Police say the dead include at least 11 children.

Some of the dead were construction workers staying in the building as they worked on it. Officials say the building did not have the necessary clearances from local authorities.

Police are looking for the builders to arrest them but the cause of the collapse isn’t known yet.
