Calf. judge says combat school must name trainees

A federal judge in California has ordered the government to disclose the names of Latin American military leaders who attended a Defense Department facility where protesters say the U.S. has trained notorious human rights abusers.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports (http://bit.ly/ZOq0e4 ) one of the graduates of the Fort Benning, Ga., installation was Roberto d’Aubuisson, a Salvadoran politician accused by opponents of promoting death squads.

The Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation provides training in combat and counterinsurgency techniques. It was formerly the School of the Americas.

The Chronicle says disclosure was ended during the George W. Bush administration. Before that the U.S. government regularly released the names of those who had attended the school.

The Obama administration argued that release of the records could expose trainees to “violence and harassment.”
