The Day Burlington’s Ash Trees Died
The City of Burlington and it’s residents should be afraid…very afraid…of the Emerald Ash Borer.
City Forester Casey Chadwick and Emma Bruemmer of the state DNR say that the hard to stop pest has been infesting trees within 31 miles of Burlingotn. Chadwick rates the seriousness of the situation at a “10″ on a scale of 1-10. He provided the city council with some context, saying about 8% of the trees in Burlington’s parkways are Ash, but that doesn’t include parks and private homes.
Bruemmer called the situation a million dollar problem, but says it would be more expensive to do nothing. The dilemma becomes even more complicated by the fact that there’s probably no one certified locally to treat for the bug. Chadwick’s staff is now just him and one other person.
