     Marjorie Grace Myers, age 93, of Sperry, Iowa passed away Thursday evening, May 16, 2013 at the Prairie Ridge Care & Rehab in Mediapolis.  She was born August 17, 1919 at home, near Burnside, Illinois, the daughter of Harvard and Bessie Todd Pettit.  On February 1, 1947 she married Ralph William Myers in Burlington.  He preceded her in death on August 13, 1973.

     She was raised near Burnside and attended Madison country school through the 6th grade.  She attended BurnsideSchool in 1936. She drove her pony and cart to school every day.  She attended BurlingtonBeautyAcademy and worked at a beauty shop in Burlington.  She also worked at the House of Fabrics in Burlington.

     Marjorie was a kind and generous lady and an inspiration to many.  She will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend.  She loved spending time with her family and friends more than anything.

     Marjorie was a homemaker and mentor and left her footprint on so many people’s hearts.  She was a member of the SperryUnitedMethodistChurch since 1947.  She was a long time member of the United Methodist Women of Sperry, a Sunday School Superintendent, and taught Sunday School.  She was a Past President of the Sperry School Community Club and enjoyed her friends in her Red Hat group.  She enjoyed playing cards weekly with her friends.  She also enjoyed gardening and her yard.  She traveled with her sister on many bus trips and trips to Hawaii, California, and Canada with her friends.

     She and Ralph lived on the farm at Sperry for 26 years.  After he passed away she moved to Mediapolis where she lived for 36 years and moved back to Sperry in 2008.

     She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Ralph, son Robert Myers, three brothers, Julius, Howard, and William Pettit, and a sister Ruth Scott.

     Survivors include two daughters, Sheila (Russ) Bloomer, of Iowa City and Mary (Joel) McKeown of Indianapolis, Indiana; 8 grandchildren, Sheryl (Don) Mark, Brent (Sharon) Dowell, Greg (Jodi) Dowell, Chad (Joni) Myers, Matthew (Leslie) McKeown, Stacie (Ryan) Whittaker, Ryan (Lori) McKeown, Justin (Kelli) Myers; 18 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

     The funeral ceremony for Marjorie Myers will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, May 25, 2013 at the Sperry United Methodist Church officiated by Rev. Jeff Kodis and Mark Pettit.  Burial will follow at the KossuthCemetery, Mediapolis. 

     The family will meet friends from 9:30 to 11:30 AM on Saturday, May 25, 2013, at the Hagele and Honts Funeral Home in Mediapolis. Friends may call from 2:00 to 7:00 PM at the Hagele and Honts Funeral Home in Mediapolis.

     In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the SperryUnitedMethodistChurch, Sperry United Methodist Women, and Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

Elizabeth Jean “Betty” Tiemeier, 92, of Burlington, died at 8:10 AM Thursday, May 16, 2013, at Rose Bush Gardens in Burlington.

 

Born February 10, 1921, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Benjamin and Margaret Fairbanks Sylvester. On November 20, 1943, she married James Charles Tiemeier in Burlington. He died February 10, 2011.

 

Betty worked at Northwestern Bell as a telephone supervisor and then was stay at home mom and then later as a sales clerk for J.S. Schramm Co. for 17 years before retiring.

 

She graduated from Burlington High School.

 

She was a member of SS. John and Paul Catholic Church, Burlington Catholic Senior Citizens Group, and RSVP Steamboat Senior Citizens Group. She served on the board of the Senior Citizens Bingo Committee where she was known as “Bingo Betty”.  She was an avid Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeyes football and basketball fan.  She enjoyed watching and feeding birds and loved flowers.

 

Survivors include four sons, Michael (Sue) Tiemeier of Peoria, AZ, Steven (Jonnie) Tiemeier of Burlington, Thomas (Judy) Tiemeier of Bettendorf, Dennis Tiemeier of Crossroads, TX; one daughter, Nancy (Tim Sr.) Dwight of Park Rapids, MN; 10 grandchildren, Michelle (Patrick) Donahue, Christine (David) McClimon, Tim Dwight Jr., Jason (Nadia) Dwight, Melissa Tiemeier, Jonathan (Jennifer) Tiemeier, Katie (Ryan) Meyer, Laura (Matt) Hatz, Mark (Grete) Tiemeier, and Joanna (Cory) Wachal; 14 great-grandchildren, Dwight, Madison, Cole, Jessica, Ben, Allie, Payton, Wade, Zoe, Addison, Gus, Carter, Isla and Tierney; one brother, Wayne Sylvester of Ennis, TX; three sisters, Sally Tilton of Murphys Burrough, TN, Marilyn Leyes of Saint Louis, MO, Patricia Johnsen of Charlotte, NC; and several nieces and nephews.

 

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, and one sister.

 

Visitation will be from noon until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Monday, May 20, 2013, at  Thielen Funeral Home.

 

The Funeral Mass of the Resurrection for Mrs. Tiemeier will be 10:00 AM Tuesday, May 21, 2013, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with Rev. Father Marty Goetz as the Celebrant.  Music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir.  Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery.  A time of food and fellowship will be held in St. John’s cafeteria following the burial.

 

Memorials have been established for Special Needs Foundation of Des Moines County and SS. John & Paul Catholic Church.
