Barbara Joyce Ervin, 75, of Bettendorf, died at 6:33 PM Sunday, May 19, 2013, at her home.

 

Born August 15, 1937, in Davenport, IA, she was the son of Chester and Grace Marie Johnston Bessenecker. She was raised by her mother and step-father, who she called dad, Jim Klingler.  On August 14, 1954, she married Robert Ervin in Davenport, Iowa.  He died November 2, 2007.

 

Barb was a homemaker.

 

She attended Davenport schools.

 

She enjoyed relaxing in a hot bath while reading a good book.   Her love and greatest enjoyment was spending time with her children and grandchildren.  

 

Survivors include three sons, Robbie Ervin of Pleasant Valley, IA, James Ervin of Netchez, MS, and Charles Ervin of Burlington; two daughters, Kirsten Carney of Pleasant Valley, IA, and Jennifer Ellis of Lone Tree, IA; 11 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Patty Marshall of Madison, IN, and Kathy Harvey of Winchester, KY; one brother, Denny Bessenecker of Melbourne, FL; and several nieces and nephews.

 

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one son, Randall, one granddaughter, Mackenzie Lynn Ervin, and one brother, Johnny Klingler.  

 

Visitation with the family to receive friends will be from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM Thursday, May 23, 2013 at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home 644 River Drive, Bettendorf, IA.

 

The funeral service for Mrs. Ervin will be 10:00 AM Friday, May 24, 2013, at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home with Chaplin Bruce McNeely officiating.  Burial will be in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Pleasant Valley, Iowa.

 

A memorial has been established.

The Graveside Service for Jack E. “Ozzie” Nelson, 65 of Stronghurst will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday May 24, 2013 in the Biggsville Cemetery with Rev.Steve Minkler officiating. Military Rites will be conducted by the Stronghurst American Legion.   Mr. Nelson died March 1, 2013 in the University Of Iowa Hosiptals and Clinics in Iowa City.  Banks & Beals Funeral Home of Strongurst is in charge of arrangements.  Condolences may be left at www.banksandbeals.com.

Judith (Judy) Eileen Thomas, age 68 of rural Mediapolis died Sunday evening, May 19, 2013 at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington, surrounded by her loving family after a long courageous battle with cancer. 

The daughter of Verner & Violet Gustafson Amenell, she was born on May 27, 1944, in Burlington.  She married Keith Thomas on November 28, 1964 in Mediapolis.  She was a 1962 graduate of Mediapolis High School and attended Iowa State University.  She was the leading member of the 1962 state runner-up  Mediapolis girls basketball team.  That team started the Bud McLearn Mediapolis girls’ basketball dynasty.   She was a homemaker.    Judy was an accomplished seamstress.  She enjoyed reading, counted cross stitch, baking, golfing, bowling, wildflowers, and sitting on the porch at their pond.  She was a Sunday School teacher, 4-H leader & county fair judge for many years. Judy was also a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Golden Hour Study Club of Mediapolis, and WELCA of Mediapolis.   Her greatest joy was spending time with her daughters & granddaughters.  She never missed going to their activities and she was their biggest fan and always offered positive encouragement.

Survivors  include her husband Keith; three daughters, Laura (Brad) Griffith of Mediapolis, Lisa Thomas (Laurie Fryar) of Austin, Texas, & Amy (Scott) Taeger of Sperry; three granddaughters, Brittany Griffith (Josh Schneiderman), Bailey Griffith & Lydia Taeger;  two step grandchildren, Nicki (Pat) Ensminger, Sky (Sara) Griffith;  five step great grandchildren, Katie, Libby & Ben Ensminger  and Delaney & Ava Griffith;  one brother, Richard (Joyce) Amenell of Newport News, VA; two sisters, Pauline (Ed) Jarrard, of Washington, IA, & Karen (Sandy) Hedges of Oakville;  an uncle, Paul Amenell  and sister-in-law MaryAnn (Nelson)  Showalter of Burlington and many nieces & nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother Eugene. 

The funeral service for Judy Thomas will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 23, 2013 at the Immanuel  Lutheran Church of Mediapolis with Rev. Dean Graber and Rev. Jerleen Schlesser officiating.  Burial will follow at Kossuth Cemetery, Mediapolis. 

Visitation will be Wednesday from noon until 8:00 p.m. with family receiving friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the Hagele & Honts Funeral Home in Mediapolis. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for the Great River Hospice House and Immanuel Lutheran Church.

Willie J. Knox, 85, of Burlington, died at his home on Sunday morning, May 19. 2013.

    

Born on February 28, 1928 in Round Pond, Arkansas, he was the son of Will and Dora Knox. He married Marthella Stigger on December 31, 1950 in Arkansas. She died on May 17, 2011. He married Nadine Howard in 1997 in St. Louis, Missouri.

Willie was a laborer. He enjoyed singing gospel music and sang in many church choirs. He was often invited to travel out of town for church singing. He was always looking for the next opportunity to go fishing. He loved Copenhagen snuff and his sweet tooth had a special fondness for pecan brittle. He was a member of Greater Hope Mission Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Nadine; two daughters, Patricia Knox of Burlington, Iowa and Bertha Gilky-Bond of St. Louis, Missouri; five sons, Alfred Lee Knox, Jerome Knox, Calvin Knox,  & Danny Knox, of Burlington, Iowa and Larry Knox of Perry, Iowa; five step-daughters, Yolanda Harris, Teresa Harris, Kathy Harris, Neesha Howard and Chareena Howard, all of Burlington, Iowa; one step-son; many grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren.           

He was preceded in death by his first wife, two brothers, one sister and one son.

    

The memorial service for Willie J. Knox will be held on Friday, May 24, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at Prugh’s Chapel, Burlington, Iowa. Rev. Fred Starling will officiate. Interment of ashes will be at a later date. The family will receive friends in Prugh’s Chapel one hour prior to the service on Friday. A memorial has been established for Greater Hope Mission Baptist Church.
