Special Needs Student Receives HS Diploma at School Meeting
It was a full house at tonight’s Burlington School Board meeting for the graduation of Hunter Wykert.
Wykert is a special needs teenager who wasn’t able to receive his diploma at the Burlington High School Commencement. He became agitated that day and had to go calm down in the hallway. By the time he was ready to receive his diploma, Hunter’s mother, Delores Wykert, was told it was too late. At tonight’s meeting Wykert’s mother expressed that she was upset about the situation that day, and said there was a lack of communication..
“The moment that we waited for was replaced with shock and disbelief when we realized Hunter’s name would not be called. We made arrangements in advance for Hunter to walk around or go into the hallway until his name was called and those accommodations were ignored by administration. Someone dropped the ball. What was supposed to happen was not conveyed to Mr. Messenger and so he honestly had no idea that he was suppose to read Hunter’s name.”
The young man received his diploma at tonight’s meeting with a big smile on his face. He was shown support by seven of his classmates who showed up in their purple graduation caps and gowns.
