Arias attorneys seek delay of second penalty phase

Jodi Arias’ attorneys have asked a judge to delay until next year a second penalty phase to allow the convicted murderer time to gather witnesses.

In a motion filed this week, her attorneys are seeking a new trial date for January.

Arias was convicted of first-degree murder on May 8 in the 2008 death of boyfriend Travis Alexander at his suburban Phoenix home.

The same panel failed to reach a unanimous decision on whether to sentence her to life or death.

The judge set a July 18 date for a new jury to be seated to determine Arias’ sentence. Her murder conviction will stand.

Her attorneys say they need the delay to allow Arias time to gather witnesses aimed at convincing a new jury her life is worth sparing.
