Dan Whalen, 82, of Burlington, died at 11:25 PM Wednesday, June 12, 2013, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.
Born August 21, 1930, in Norway, IA, he was the son of Joseph and Mary Horwedel Whalen. On September 23, 1953, he married Evelyn Nichols in Canton, Missouri.
Dan was a dedicated truck driver for Arledge Transfer, C.W. Tranpsort and A.B. F. out of Springfield, Illinois, retiring May of 1993. After retirement he worked for Lab Corp receiving and delivering specimens and samples.
He was a 1950 graduate of Burlington High School.
He was a member of Teamsters Local #916 and a past member of Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge #579.
He was a “jack of all trades” a Mr. Fix It you could call him, and a mentor to his grandchildren. Dan was a cancer survivor. At the age of 80 Dan bought his first 4 wheeler and enjoyed driving it around. He could talk to anyone and did not know a stranger, he always enjoyed sharing his adventures of being on the road. He also enjoyed reading, mowing his yard, country music, and playing on his computer especially on the internet. He was a big fan of Burlington Derailed and loved his Schnauzer dogs, Susie, Suki, Mandy. His greatest love was his family and living in the country.
Survivors include his wife, Evelyn; one daughter, Vickie Hightower of Burlington; six grandchildren, Charlie (Janice) Hightower Jr., Jennifer (Steve) Jarvis, Ellie (Andrew “Boots”) Strawhacker, Sam (Stephanie) Hightower, Joe (Alicia) Whalen, and Melody Bass, 15 great-grandchildren, Natalie, Charlie III, Daniel, Jebidiah, Katherine, Jacob, Brandon, Sydney, Johnathon, Christopher, and William, several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, James Wesley Whalen, one infant daughter, Helen Marie Whalen, one great-grandson, Matthew Alexander Hightower, and brothers and sisters.
Visitation will be from noon until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Friday, June 14, 2013 at Thielen Funeral Home.
The funeral service for Mr. Whalen will be 10:00 AM Saturday, June 15, 2013, at Thielen Funeral Home with officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. A time of food and fellowship provided by First Baptist Church of Yarmouth will be held in the community room at Thielen Funeral Home following the burial.
