Robert Walter Jannings, 81, of Burlington, died at 2:01 PM Monday, June 17, 2013, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington. Arrangements are pending at the Thielen Funeral Home & Crematory.
John Raymond Vandenberg, 86, of Burlington, died at 8:00 AM Monday, June 17, 2013, at his home.
Born October 6, 1926, in Keosauqua, IA, he was the son of John Albert and Macil Young Vandenberg. On June 12, 1945, he married Pauline Virginia Gill in Keosauqua.
John worked for Farm Bureau Insurance for 15 years. He had also been Stewart and Pauline was the Matron of Henry and Des Moines County Homes for 20 years and had worked as a manager for Holiday Inn in Burlington.
He was a 1944 graduate of Keosauqua High School.
He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving in the Philippines during World War II.
He was of the Methodist faith. He was a member of the Moose Lodge, V.F.W., American Legion, Eagles, and the Masons of Douds, IA. He enjoyed NBA basketball and was a Iowa Hawkeyes football fan.
Survivors include his wife, Pauline; one daughter, Rebecca “Becky” (Jerry) Grinstead of Burlington; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Richard Vandenberg of Hudson, IA, and Robert Vandenberg of Minneapolis, MN, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one son.
Cremation has been entrusted to Thielen Crematory.
There will be no visitation.
The military memorial service for Mr. Vandenberg will be 1:00 PM Thursday, June 20, 2013, at Thielen Funeral Home rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard.
In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for Great River Hospice, American Heart Association, and American Cancer Society.
