If you’re looking for a furry new friend, look no further than the Des Moines County Humane Society.
June is “Adopt a Shelter Cat Month” and all cat and kitten adoption fees are cut by $20. Co-President of the Board of Directors for the shelter, Kelly Taeger, says right now the shelter is overflowing with kittens..
“Spring seems to be the season for liters of kittens. It’s kind of a combination time of year with not spaying and neutering. We always have so many in the spring and summer”.
Many have wondered if the newly renovated shelter is a no-kill shelter..
“We can never be no-kill because we are the city’s pound. We try to make it as low-kill of a shelter as possible. Unfortunately, every now and then we’ll get very sick animals that come in or animals that are on the vicious side that we don’t feel comfortable adopting”.
Fees are $90 for dogs and usually $65 for cats- with the exception of this month. Those fees include a voucher for spay and neutering. The Humane Society is located at 2000 N. Roosevelt in Burlington. They are open from 3-6pm Monday through Friday, and 1-5pm on the weekends.
