Geneva M. Samuels, 83, of Morning Sun, Iowa, died July 9, 2013, at the MorningSunCareCenter. Born May 3, 1930, in Yarmouth, IA, she was the daughter of Collier W. and Marie Nelson Stevens. She married Robert L. Samuels on June 3, 1949 in Winfield, IA, and he preceded her in death Feb. 28, 2005. Mrs. Samuels was a graduate of Yarmouth High School and attended Iowa Wesleyan College at Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. She taught in a one room country school at Oak Grove which was NW of Mt. Pleasant. An accomplished musician, she taught herself to play piano in the third grade and served as the Morning Sun United Methodist Church organist for nearly fifty years. Her passion was music; she taught piano lessons to hundreds of students during her lifetime, accompanied band students during music competitions, played for numerous weddings and funerals, and shared her love of music by playing the piano regularly at the Morning Sun Care Center and at Midwest Old Threshers Reunion in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. She organized and belonged to various music groups including the Rhythm Rockers, Double Tones, Gospelairs, Sunshine Choir, and composed music and directed the Methodist Church Handbell Choir. She was a superb cook, known for her homemade pies, Christmas cookies and candy. Her love of gardening and preserving kept family and friends well supplied with produce over many years. Playing cards was also a favorite pastime she enjoyed and she belonged to several card clubs. Above all, she cherished her time spent with children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, good friends, and family reunion gatherings. She was a member of the Morning Sun United Methodist Church, the Morning Sun Lioness club, the Morning Sun Legion Auxillary, United Methodist Women, and Midway Circle. Survivors include one brother, Edwin(Helen) Stevens, of Rockford, IL: one son, Roger(Margaret) of Morning Sun; one daughter, Roberta(Evan) of Clarksville, TN; one daughter-in-law, Jo Samuels of Durant, IA; one sister-in-law, Mary Stevens, of Burlington, Iowa; six grandchildren, Todd (Jennifer) of Davenport, Iowa; Jess (Michelle) of Durant, Iowa; Trent (Taren) of Morning Sun, Iowa; Brett (Stacey) of Wapello, Iowa; Erin (Derek) DeMoss, of Dixon, Iowa; and Sydney Caldwell, of Clarksville, TN; eleven great grandchildren, and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a son, Ronald, and a brother, Everett Stevens, of Burlington, IA.
Funeral services will be Saturday July 13, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Morning Sun, with Rev. Sue-Ellen Sherman officiating. Interment will follow at Elmwood Cemetery. Friends may call from 2-7:00 p.m. Friday at Hagele and Honts Funeral Home in Morning Sun, where the family will meet with friends from 5-7:00 p.m.
