Congressman Lobesack Takes a Boat Ride in Burlington
It was a day of Mississippi River sight seeing in Burlington for Iowa Congressman Dave Lobesack yesterday.
Des Moines County Sheriff Mike Johnstone took Lobesack out for a jon boat tour to look at Lock and Dam 18, O’Connell Slough, the Generating Plant, and to show him the marks left on the train bridge by the barges that got loose a couple weeks ago. Lobesack said the purpose of the river tour was to look at what improvements are needed…
“I was here with people who know a lot about the river and whats needed here, not only in terms of locks and dam but also the levee district. Just making certain that commerce, which is so important to this region and for the entire country, can continue and increase. As far as the levee district, theres a lot of concerns thats theres a lot of siltation into the river and that creates problems just because of the river level itself. When you get a flood, its just going to push the river up that much higher, so there are a lot of concerns”.
It’s been 5 years since Lobesack’s last river tour in our area.
