Albert Lea “Pee Wee” Russell, 85, of Gladstone, IL passed away at 10:50AMSunday, July 14, 2013 at the home of his daughter, Karen Mynatt, rural LaHarpe, IL, with both of his children at his side.
He was born November 1, 1927 in La Belle, MO the son of Frank and Myrtle Briscoe Russell. He was first married to Mary Scanlan, they later divorced. He married Laura Ann Dougherty on July 2, 1971 in Lomax, IL. She preceded him in death on April 22, 2012.
Mr. Russell farmed until 1957 at which time he began working at Champion Spark Plug in Burlington, IA. He retired on January 28, 1989. While at Champion he was instrumental in establishing the UAW local, where he later served as it’s president and on the bargaining committee. He was a member of the GladstoneUnitedMethodistChurch. Earlier in life he was a volunteer fireman in Terre Haute, IL. He enjoyed wood working, and built many items for his family. He also enjoyed gardening, golfing and traveling, especially to Nashville and Branson. His greatest enjoyment came from spending time with his children and families, siblings, friends and neighbors. He was often seen helping his friends and neighbors. During the last few weeks of his illness numerous friends and family stopped to visit, helping to brighten his days. He was very appreciative of their concern.
He is survived by 1 daughter, Karen (Larry) Mynatt of LaHarpe, 1 son, Dale (Dixie) Russell of Haslet, TX, 2 stepsons, Jack (Sue) Dougherty of Muscatine, IA and David (Ellen) Dougherty of Flagstaff, AZ, 2 stepdaughters, Pam (Bob) Mareno of Fullerton, CA and Susan (Greg) Keys of Houston, TX, 13 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, 1 brother, Robert Russell of LaHarpe and 4 sisters, Mildred Jones and Louise Link, both of LaHarpe, Helen Torrance of Gladstone, IL and Donna Bennett of Sperry, IA.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Laura, and 1 brother, Delmar Russell. Services will be held at 10:30AMWednesday, July 17, 2013 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe with Rev. Jeff Robins officiating. Following the funeral, a graveside service will be held at 12:00 PM at the CarmanCemetery. Friends may call after 3:00PM Tuesday at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00PM. Dorothy Anna “Dot” Lind, 94, of Burlington, Iowa, died at BurlingtonCareCenter, Burlington, Iowa, on Saturday morning, July 13, 2013.
Born on February 3, 1919 in Burlington, Iowa, she was the daughter of Harry J. and Naomi Spiegel Gustafson. She married Donald Lind on September 28, 1940. He died in 1982.
Dorothy was a homemaker and also worked at Schramm’s for five years where she excelled as a seamstress. She often spoke of the music that always was in their home as a child, singing and dancing around the piano. As a child, Dorothy loved animals and would bring stray pups home. Her mother would question her about the pups appearing at their home and Dorothy would tell her that they just followed her home. As a homemaker she took pride in the way she cared for her home. She even refinished the majority of the furniture they owned. She loved to dance and enjoyed the Jazz Club, Civic Music and the Eagles Club. She was a member of MessiahLutheranChurch.
She is survived by several nieces, nephews and many friends of the family. She was preceded in death by her husband, “Bud”; her parents; two brothers, Robert Paul “Bobby” Gustafson and Howard “Bart” Gustafson, also known as Bart Howard.
Funeral services for Dorothy Anna “Dot” Lind will be held on Friday, July 19, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. at Prugh’s Chapel. Interment will be in AspenGroveCemetery, Burlington, Iowa.
No formal visitation is planned. Friends may call in Prugh’s Chapel on Thursday from 8:00 a,m, until 5:00 p.m. and on Friday from 8:00 a.m. until the time of service. A memorial has been established for Burlington Schools Music Programs. Condolences may be left at www.prughfuneralservice.com.
Caracci “Louie” Guzman, 89, of Burlington, died at Great River Hospice House on Monday morning, July 15, 2013.
Born on June 4, 1924 in Ft. Madison, Iowa, he was the son of Jose and Refugio Delgado Guzman. He married Carmen Puga on October 14, 1949 in Keokuk, Iowa. They later divorced. He married Shirley M. Septer in June, 1978 in Muscatine, Iowa and they celebrated 35 years together.
Louie served in the U.S. Army as a special vehicle operator from May 1943 to August 1945. He was employed as a truck driver at IAAP. He was an animal lover, enjoying all pets but he especially enjoyed walking his beloved pet Misty. He also liked riding his bicycle and vegetable gardening. Louie was always eager to spend time with his family and was a self taught guitar player which brought many hours of enjoyment to his friends and family. He was a member of SS. John & Paul Catholic Church.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley; three sons, Robert (Becky) Guzman of Loveland, Colorado, Daniel (Deb) Guzman of Burlington, Iowa and John Guzman of Davenport, Iowa; four daughters, Victoria Guzman (Dennis) Wilson of Iowa City, Iowa, Patricia Guzman of Burlington, Iowa, twins, Barbara Guzman (Randy) Frerichs of Davenport, Iowa and Brenda Guzman of Davenport, Iowa; one step-daughter, Barbara (Jim) Talbott of Burlington, Iowa; 15 grandchildren, Aaron, Jeremy, Michele, Earnie, Teri, Jackson, Sarah, Dominic, Eli, Candi, Maya, Angelo, Isaiah, Daniel and Jessica; one step-granddaughter, Kelsey; 30 great-grandchildren; one sister, Betty (Frank) Sandoval of Phoenix, Arizona; two brothers, Ernie Guzman of Arizona and Felix (Nellie) Guzman of Ft. Madison, Iowa; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Carmen; his parents; two sisters, Lupe and Mela; five brothers, Joe, Neno, Jesse, Pete and Claro; three grandchildren, Matthew, Jacob and Jamie; one step-daughter, Carla; and his family pet, Huey.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday evening from 4:30 until 7:00 p.m. at Prugh’s Chapel, Burlington, Iowa. Cremation will be accorded following visitation.
