FREE Sand in Burlington
The city of Burlington will be giving away bags of sand beginning tomorrow.
It’s the same sand that protected the Memorial Auditorium and the Market Street Lift Station from flooding earlier this year. Public Works Department crews will start tearing down the hesco barriers tomorrow. All the enclosed sand that’s in bags will be placed at the south end of the parking lot, south of the Auditorium.
The DNR doesn’t recommend re-using sand that’s been used in flood control for sand boxes, on beaches, or in school yards. From a health standpoint, it would be acceptable to spread it on a backyard flower garden, gravel streets & alleys, parking lots, eroded areas in ditches, and low-lying areas.
The DNR also does not recommend re-using empty sandbags, they should be put in your regular trash for disposal in the landfill, again for health reasons.
