Loyal D. Hewitt, age 80 of Morning Sun, died Sunday August 18, 2013 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. The son of Elton and Ollie (Skipton) Hewitt, he was born June 12, 1933 at Mt. Pleasant. On March 21, 1952 he married Barbara Jon Yakle at rural Grandview; she died November 16, 2011. He was a graduate of the Morning Sun High School. He operated Hewitt Excavating and Sanitary Disposal for over 60 years. In earlier years he was a volunteer fireman in Morning Sun. He was on the committee for the Morning Sun Community Building. He worked for Drainage District #12 until 2012. He was a member of the Eagles Club. He attended Solid Rock Baptist Church in Wapello. He enjoyed music, dancing and woodworking.
Survivors include: one son Kim and Sandy Hewitt of Morning Sun; two grandchildren; Gabe and Christina Hewitt and Danielle and Scott Beik all of Morning Sun; three great grandchildren, Hunter, Isaac, and Garrett.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and two sisters.
The funeral service will be Saturday August 24, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at the Solid Rock Baptist Church, with Pastor Dan Doolin officiating. Interment will follow at the Elmwood Cemetery in Morning Sun. Friends may call on Friday from 3-8:00 p.m. at the Hagele and Honts Funeral Home in Morning Sun, where the family will greet friends from 6-8:00 p.m. Memorials have been established for Solid Rock Baptist Church and the Morning Sun Community Building.

Marilyn Ertz, 94, of Burlington, died at her home on Sunday, August 18, 2013.
Born on December 26, 1918 in Birmingham, Iowa, she was the daughter of Victor and Gladys Graham Campbell. She married Paul F. Ertz on November 15, 1941 in Burlington, Iowa. He died on January 19, 1994.
Marilyn was a secretary in the safety department at IAAP for 35 years. She enjoyed playing golf and bridge. She was a basketball player in high school and her love of the game continued throughout her life as she would watch both professional and college basketball as often as she could. She was a big fan of both the Iowa Hawkeyes and the San Antonio Spurs. She was a member of SS. John & Paul Catholic Church.
She is survived by two daughters, Susan Ertz of Burlington, Iowa and Roxanne (David) Smith of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa; two grandsons, Jacob and Jered Smith; four great-grandchildren, Zander, Madisyn, Candice and Zachary; one sister, Ruth Maddix of Tracy, California; and a number of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Paul; three brothers, Keith, James and Victor “Buddy”; and one granddaughter, Ann Elisa Smith.
The Funeral Mass for Marilyn Ertz will be held on Saturday, August 24, 2013 at 9:30 a.m. at St. Paul Catholic Church, Burlington, Iowa. Celebrant will be Fr. Marty Goetz. Special music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Burlington, Iowa.
The family will receive friends on Friday evening from 6:00 until 7:00 p.m. in Prugh’s Chapel. A memorial has been established for St. Paul Catholic Church.

Wesley Dean Gerst, age 73, of rural Mediapolis and formerly of Oakville, died at his home Sunday afternoon, August 18, 2013. He was born on July 10, 1940 in Oakville, the son of William F. and Verlee Pontzius Gerst. He married Joan Kramer and they later divorced. Wes married Linda Springsteen on May 29, 1994 in Oakville.
He graduated from Oakville High School in 1958 and then attended junior college. He was the Fire Chief at Oakville from 1967 to 1982. He worked for US Gypsum and Oakville Feed & Grain. Wes then farmed with his brother, Duane for 23 years.
He loved to go fishing with his children and grandchildren.
His survivors include his wife, Linda; two daughters, Donna & Dan Robinson of Galesburg, Illinois and Laura & Glenn Ewton of Layton, Utah; a son, Tim & Lori Gerst of Wapello; a stepson, Scott Springsteen of Mediapolis; a stepdaughter, Dawn & David Shipman of Oakville; six grandchildren, Blake and Brad Ewton, Makaela Robinson, and Kelsey, Hattie, and Dalton Shipman; his mother, Verlee Gerst of Oakville; a brother, Melvin & Nancy Gerst of Oakville; a sister, Beverly Wick of Valrico, Florida; two sisters-in-law, Barb Gerst of Oakville and Marcy Gerst of Columbus Junction; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, William; and two brothers, Duane and Darrell.
The funeral ceremony for Wesley Gerst will be held at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, August 21, 2013, at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello. Kenny Gerst will officiate. Burial will follow at the Edwards Cemetery at Oakville.
Friends may call from 2:00 to 7:00 PM on Tuesday at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello where the family will meet friends from 5:00 to 7:00 PM.
A Memorial Fund has been established.
