Lloyd George Sanderson, 89, of Middletown, Iowa, died at the VA Medical Center, Iowa City, Iowa, on Sunday morning, August 25, 2013.
Born on April 8, 1924 in Elsberry, Missouri, he was the son of Terry J. and Mabel M. Smith Sanderson. He married Marian L. Dunham on August 6, 1947 in Keokuk, Iowa. They later divorced. He then married Marge E. Johnson on October 11, 1964. She preceded him in death on August 18, 1990. He married Dolores Woodall Helmick on July 11, 2009 in Middletown, Iowa.
Lloyd enlisted US Army in 1940 at El Paso, Texas at the age of 16. He was qualified on a 30 caliber machine gun and was a light truck driver. He saw action in W.W. II in Italy, Europe and Africa. He received the Eastern Campaign Medal and a Bronze Star. He achieved the rank of Corporal.
He worked for Coca Cola, Hubbenger, CIPS as a lineman, Kirby representative ( top salesman), had his own tree removal business – Lloyd Sanderson Tree Service in the 50′s, became a small plane pilot and electrician. He worked and retired from the ammunitions plant in Middletown, Iowa.
Lloyd was a member of the Eagles Club, Masons, Shriners and was an active District Commander for the V.F.W. He established the James W. Sanderson POST 9162 in honor of his twin brother in 1986. Lloyd organized and saw the establishment of the Wall of All Services Monument at Memorial Park Cemetery, Burlington, Iowa. He especially enjoyed the fellowship of the V.F.W. good ole boys on Tuesday afternoons at the water hole.
Lloyd loved music and in earlier years he used to play the guitar and harmonica. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, often taking his sons with him. He also enjoyed bowling and golfing. He would always make Sunday breakfast which consisted of pancakes.
He is survived by his wife, Dolores; two sons, James “Eddie” E. Sanderson of Illinois and Robert “Bob” Sanderson of Twin Lakes, Wisconsin; four daughters, Joyce “Jodi” L. Sanderson Hauk of Warsaw, Illinois, Cynthia “Cyndi” E. Sanderson of Warsaw, Illinois, Elizabeth “Liz” A. Sanderson Jones of Quincy, Illinois and Tammy S. Sanderson Keegan of Geneseo, Illinois; 21 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Waunita Sanderson of Louisiana.
He was preceded in death by his second wife, Marge; three brothers, Lloyd R., Terry “ Jack” and James “Jim” Sanderson; one sister, Orpha I. Kuntz; two sons, George M. & Aubrey V. Sanderson.
Funeral services for Lloyd G. Sanderson will be held on Friday, August 30, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Prugh’s Chapel. Pastor Dan Dingus will officiate. Interment will be in Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard.
