Theodore Henry “Ted” Johnson, 70, of Burlington, Iowa, died at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, Iowa, on Sunday morning, September 1, 2013.
Born on November 26, 1942 in Bellflower, California, he was the son of George & Catherine Smiley Johnson. He married Sherry Rainwater, she preceded him in death; he married Connie Griswold on January 28, 1984 in Burlington, Iowa.
Ted grew up in Bellflower, Calif. In 1989 he moved to Burlington. Formerly he was a chef then later began driving a semi over the road. In 1992 Ted & Connie became a driving team for Liberty Transport for 20 years. He was an expert wood crafter, making remarkable original furniture designs. He was a lover of cats, a fan of old western movies and classic cars, enjoyed fishing with his sons, playing with grandson, Blake and visiting friends and family. Above all Ted understood that Jesus is real and is his Savior. He was a member of First Assembly Church of God, Burlington, Iowa.
He is survived by his wife Connie of Burlington; two sons, Brad Caruso of Ocalla, Florida and Phillip (Melody) Caruso of Inverness, Florida; one grandson, Blake Henry Caruso at home; two granddaughters, Kara Caruso of Ocalla, Florida and Shelby Caruso of Ogden, Iowa; sister and brother-in-law, Janet & Ralph Casper of Cave Junction, Oregon; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Sherry Rainwater Johnson; and one brother, Wayne Smiley.
The funeral service for Theodore “Ted” Johnson will be held on Friday, September 6, 2013 at 6:00 p.m. at the First Assembly of God Church. Pastor Larry Mumma will officiate. No formal visitation is planned. Friends may call at the First Assembly of God Church on Friday from 4:30 until the time of the service.
Following the service a time of food & fellowship will be held in the church fellowship hall. Following the funeral cremation will be entrusted to the care of Prugh Funeral Service. A memorial has been established in memory of Theodore Johnson.Condolences may be left at www.prughfuneralservice.com.
Dorothy Humphrey, 83, of Burlington, died at 10:40 PM Wednesday, September 4, 2013, at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.
Born December 10, 1929, at her home five miles northeast of Stockport, she was the daughter of Glenn F. and Meda Carter Giberson.
Dorothy worked for J.I. Case Company as one of the first females on the production line, where she retired in 1991.
She was a 1947 graduate of Fairfield High School.
She was a member of the Moose Lodge and Eagle’s club. She enjoyed volunteer work and helping people. She was an animal lover, she especially loved dogs and was a dog sitter for her friends, and also loved horses and had some of her own throughout the years. She was a beautiful seamstress, and enjoyed traveling, dancing, and had a large network of friends that had breakfast and lunch outings, who were always there for each other.
Survivors include one son, Bryan (Ann) Humphrey of Sperry, IA; two daughters, Glenda (Curt) Lowry of Normal, IL and Connie (Robert) Walker of West Chester, IL; seven grandchildren, Grant (Tina) Humphrey, Maggie Humphrey, Heather (Paul) Ulmer, Sommer (Todd) Baum, Chris Lowry, Tawny (Josh) Quinn, and Stephanie Walker; 12 great-grandchildren; one brother, John (Cheryl) Giberson of Salem, IL; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and one brother, Bob Giberson.
Visitation will be from 1:00 PM until 3:00 PM Sunday, September 8, 2013 at Thielen Funeral Home where the family will receive friends.
Cremation will be entrusted to Thielen Crematory following the visitation.
The memorial service for Ms. Humphrey will be 10:00 AM Monday, September 9, 2013, at Thielen Funeral Home with Reverend Dean Graber officiating. A time of food and fellowship will be held in the community room at Thielen Funeral Home following the service. Burial will be in Glasgow Cemetery in Glasgow, Iowa following the service at 1:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for the Des Moines County Humane Society and the American Cancer Society.
