6 Candidates; 2 Open Seats on WB School Board
Tomorrow is election day for Iowa School Districts and unlike the Burlington School District, there are more candidates than open seats on the West Burlington School Board.
There are two open seats with 6 people running, 4 of them running as write-ins. Tonight the two candidates on the ballot were asked a list of questions.. one pertaining to budget cuts. Jay Day doesn’t think cuts are an issue at West Burlington…
“I’m going to be very clear with you, we don’t have any budget issues like Burlington does. We are growing, our enrollment is up, and every child who open enrolls in West Burlington brings $6,200 to the table.”
If elected tomorrow, Jay Day and Lee Boughton both agreed at tonight’s forum that they would push for a school resource officer in the buildings. Jay Day feels it’s the best way to ensure safety….
“We need a school resource officer. We need a well trained police officer in our school at all times. That is the best answer to school safety. I know our school is looking at the ALICE program and I think its great. It’s proactive involving students and teachers but you know what, our teachers and students have enough on their plate. Teaching them to throw textbooks at intruders is not the answer.”
The four “write-in” candidates for West Burlington are Nate Prickett, Randy Fry, Steve Young, and Mike Vandenberg. Voting hours are from noon-8pm.
