I-DOT Proposes Bypass of Mepo and Wapello
It’s a project that’s been talked about since 1996… a four-lane Highway from Burlington to one mile north of Iowa 78.
Today the Iowa Department of Transportation presented a map of the two proposed bypasses it may include, one being Wapello. Wapello resident Harla Peck has mixed feelings about the project…
“I think it definitely needs to be done. We live next to the highway and there is a lot of traffic on it, and I think it’s dangerous the way it is. I’m not exactly happy about how close they have this set to my house but then again, I realize they can’t make everybody happy.”
Mediapolis is also a town that could be bypassed, if that’s what the DOT decides. John Vose of the Mediapolis City Council says of the two options, bypass or a four-lane running through town, the bypass would be the right choice…
“The bypass is the safest alternative. If they use the five-lane right through the present Highway 61, there would be no stop lights. It would be a real nightmare for traffic.”
The environmental study is expected to be completed by fall of 2014. After that, the project will be considered for funding, and if approved, the DOT will develop a design and construction will begin.
