Lighthouse Monument for Burl. Boating Victims
Boaters who pass Burlington along the Mississippi River will soon have a permanent reminder of what can happen if you are not safe on the waterway.
The River-Rat Safety Awareness Organization will be receiving a 16-foot tall lighthouse this week to honor victims of the unforgettable 2012 boating crash between two Jon boats. Carlos Capdevila is president of the organization…
“We were brainstorming to see what we could do to put some kind of visual by the river for people to remember what could happen if safety is not something being considered when on a boat. An example would be lights at night, life jackets, things like that. We wanted to put some kind of reminder of what can happen based on what happened to these kids.”
The lighthouse should be arriving this week. The next step will be to work with the city to decide where it can be placed along the river.
Four young adults from Southeast Iowa died in the boat accident last summer. They were 20-year-old Caitlyn Atchley, 22-year-old Jacob Boyd, 21-year old Blake Eakins and 21-year old Matthew House.
