Burlington Man Falls Asleep at the Wheel, Causes Serious Injury

It was a bad situation yesterday afternoon on US 34 after a driver fell asleep at the wheel.

57-year-old Benny Stoltz of Burlington was 1/2 mile east of Carman Road, traveling westbound, when he fell asleep, crossed the center line, and struck a vehicle carrying 43-year-old Brian Lane of Mount Union, who was the driver, and 41-year-old Jennifer Lane of Mount Union, the passenger. After the collision, the vehicle driven by Lane traveled off the road and overturned. The passenger, then had to be extricated by emergency personnel and flown to Iowa City Hospital with serious injuries.

Also in the accident was a third driver, 18-year-old Katie Heidersheit of Arenzville, Illinois. Heidersheit was behind the couple from Mt Union, and was also struck on the front. She was treated at the scene for a minor injury. Stoltz, the man who had fallen asleep, was treated for a minor injury also. He was cited for improper lane usage.

The man starts work at 5 am and ends early in the day as a union welder. He gets drug tested automatically when he least expects it. AND they did check his blood at the hospital when he was treated. Just tired and fell asleep. Not a good situation at all…but for goodness sakes, don’t pass judgement on the man, that’s God’s job!

      • I did NOT pass judgement. I merely stated they needed to make sure that he wasn’t impaired. It should e standard procedure.

  2. “Improper lane usage”???? You have to be kidding!!!!! I hope they drug tested him and did a sobriety test!!!!

  3. sue, if you go over and read your comment, it sounds very much like you passed judgment. maybe that was not your intensions but it sounded as if. im sure the man himself is devastated on what happened and if he could take it back he would. accidents do happen not all that happen involve drugs or alcohol or make the man a bad person
