New Section of Flint River Trail Open

It been an ongoing project, but the Flint River Trail can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Two of three phases have now been completed, phase two officially opened today to the public after a ribbon cutting ceremony at the intersection of Flint Bottom Road and Prairie Grove Road. Southeast Iowa Regional Planning Commission Director, Zach James, says it’s been a long process..

“I’ve been working on this since 2005, personally. It all started with the Vision Iowa Application, which I believe was in 2004. That was for several projects.. the library, Des Moines County Heritage Museum, Burlington Bees, Big Hollow, and then the idea was to connect everything to Flint River Trail. So all those other project were completed several years ago and this is the only project remaining.”

James thinks the trail could be complete in the next 2-3 years. Once it’s finished, riders will be able to access the trail along the river front in Burlington and ride all the way to Big Hollow, a total of 20 miles.
