Dena Irena Woods, 97, of Burlington, Iowa, died at Great River Hospice House, West Burlington, Iowa on Wednesday afternoon, October 16, 2013.

    

Born on December 14, 1915 in Brashear, Missouri, she was the daughter of Elza S. and Eva D. Reynolds Cooper. She married Virgil Thomas on February 23, 1933 in Kirksville, Missouri.

     

Dena was a homemaker and worked at several factories in the area. She enjoyed hobbies, crafts and family. She was very devoted about taking care of her car and was very proud of it. She affectionately cared for her grandchildren, was a good cook and loved attending church services at Burlington Four Square Gospel Church where she was a member.

 

She is survived by one grandson, Michael Shawn (Teresa) McAninch of Burlington, Iowa; two granddaughters, Dawn Stewart of West Burlington, Iowa and Linda (Terry) Ballew of Marshall, Texas; 13 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great-grandchildren; and special friends, Ruth Christofferson of Carman, Illinois and Deb Snowden of Burlington, Iowa.

    

She was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil; one daughter; her parents; five brothers; and one sister.

    

Funeral services for Dean Irena Woods will be held on Friday, October 18, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Prugh’s Chapel, Burlington, Iowa. Pastor Sam Fratt will officiate. Interment will be in Colorado Springs, Colorado at a later date. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Friday in Prugh’s Chapel. Ronald R. Calvert, 77 years, of Donnellson, Iowa died surrounded by his family at 12:47 amWednesday, October 16, 2013 at Mercy Hospital, Iowa City, Iowa.  He was born February 23, 1936 at Revere, Missouri, a son of Cecil and Dorothy Lee (Toops) Calvert.  On July 25, 1959, he married Virginia E. Hocker at Keokuk, Iowa.  She survives. 

 

Ron was a 1953 graduate of ArgyleHigh School, and was a veteran of the United States Air Force. He worked 35 years at Chevron, and later Monsanto.  He was of the Christian faith.  He was past president of the Lee County Fair Board and Green Acres Golf Course.  He was the class reunion organizer for the Argyle Schools.  He enjoyed fishing, golfing, painting, tinkering, playing his guitar, racing, and was a Nascar fan. 

 

He is survived by his wife, Virginia Calvert, of Donnellson, Iowa; one son, Rodney (Susan) Calvert, of Donnellson, Iowa; two daughters, Rhonda (Brett) Longenecker, of Keokuk, Iowa and Roxane (Phil) Moyes, of Montrose, Iowa; three grandchildren: Naomi (Tyler) Wheatley, Brandy Popejoy, and Joshua (Amy) Pihl; two great grandchildren, Chloe and William; nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, George Calvert, and one sister, Irene Sobaski.

 

His family will greet friends from 5:30 to 7:00 pmFriday, October 18, 2013 at the Barr Memorial Chapel, Fort Madison, Iowa.  A Memorial service will be held at 10:30 amSaturday, October 19, 2013 at Barr Memorial Chapel, with Pastor Bill Willis officiating.  Burial will be at the ArgyleMemorialGardens, Argyle, Iowa.  A memorial has been established, and contributions may be made at the Barr Memorial Chapel, Fort Madison, Iowa.  Online condolences to the Calvert family may be made at the Barr Memorial Chapel website, www.barrmemorialchapel.com.

Walter “Stretch” Landers, 85, of Burlington, died at 12:46 AM Wednesday, October 16, 2013, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

 

Born April 20, 1928, in Burlington, he was the son of William Michael and Myrtle A. Ledman Landers. On January 24, 1953, he married Mildred Evelyn Davis in Burlington.

 

Stretch had worked first as a helper and then as a heavy equipment mechanic, inspector and then as a shop foreman at Iowa Army Ammunition Plant.  He retired in 1993 after 43 years.

 

He was a 1947 graduate of Burlington High School.

 

He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving during the Korean War from 1950 until 1952 as a Sergeant with Military Policemen in the Philippines.

 

He was a member of the V.F.W. and the Century Club at SCC.  He was an avid SCC basketball fan and had season tickets for over 60 years.  He was a fan of basketball overall and was also an Iowa Hawkeyes football fan.  He enjoyed his garden, doing small engine repair, working on lawn mowers and especially his family.

 

Survivors include his wife, Millie; two sons, Shawn (Debbie) Landers of Biggsville, IL, Kyle (Cindy) Landers of Ventura, CA; one daughter, Karla (Rick) Knipe of Fort Madison; five grandchildren, Erica Niggemeyer of Des Moines, IA, Melissa Schnedler of Columbia, MO, Aaron Landers of Macomb, IL, and Jadee Landers and Emilee Landers, both of Biggsville, IL; four great-grandchildren, Eleanor, Annabell, and Madilynn Niggemeyer, and Mollie Schnedler; three nieces, Barbara Kimmel, Judy Lemon, and Chris Hempel.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, Helen Tyrell, Margaret Kemp, and June Ensminger, one brother, Duane Landers, and one nephew, Paul Mattson.

 

Cremation has been entrusted to Thielen Crematory.

 

The memorial visitation for Mr. Landers will be from 1:00 PM until 3:00 PM Saturday, October 19, 2013, at Thielen Funeral Home where the family will receive friends.  Burial will be at a later date in Aspen Grove Cemetery.
