4 Burlington Students Charged Due to Bullying Video

The Burlington students involved in the bullying video that’s gone viral on Facebook are facing the consequences.

Burlington Police charged the three 13-year-old students who were pushing and hitting another student with Serious Assault and Disorderly Conduct. The individual, who is 12-years-old and video taped the entire incident, has also been charged with Disorderly Conduct for her involvement.

All four individuals have been taken into custody and transported to the Lee County Juvenile Detention Facility to await a future court appearance.

The incident took place in Perkins Park in Burlington, next to the school’s administration building. In the video you can see the three kids teasing, pushing, and hitting another kid. After the video went viral, the school district and authorities got involved.

The video may be the victim’s best friend. Without it, I doubt that anything would have happened. Too often no one sees it happen, even if they’re in the same room. If the victim is brave enough to say something, he/she is told, “Just ignore them and they’ll go away.” or, “If you didn’t get so mad at them they wouldn’t do that.” These are lies that vindicate the bullies and blame their victims. Well meaning people spread these lies and perpetuate the problem. The video shows that it doesn’t work like that. School grounds are a most common place for bullying because bullies have captive victims and predictable authorities they can manipulate. Teachers are more often enablers of bullies and sometimes even enforcers of the bully system because it’s easier to pacify an honest victim than to deal with a real bully. Fortunately for the victim here, it didn’t happen at school, and the perpetrators failed to realize how much differently city officials would respond to this behavior. Thanks a lot to the citizens of Burlington who demand a difference be made.

David you made very good points, but as with everything in life, there is another side to this story. The “victim” and his friends had just got done, surrounding, bullying, and beating up another boy. If you listen to this video you will hear them saying that. I am not excusing their actions, but things are not always as they appear and people should not be so quick to judge. I am more ashamed of the things the adults are saying surrounding this situation than I am of the boys for sticking up for thier friend.

You should be ashamed of yourself. You pretty much just said to fight violence with violence. Who taught u right from wrong when u were growing up???

I used to live in Burlington as a child and teenager. That place has gone to shit. There’s more crime there now than ever. We used to leave our doors open at night as well as our windows. You used to be able to let kids play outside until it started to get dark and let them walk to school by themselves. Now, kids are shooting kids, drugs are all over the streets, teen pregnancy as young as 15 is considered normal, young kids joining gangs, rape every other day or so, murder, and there’s more worthless people in Burlington than there are good people any more… Someone really needs to step in and take action. People sitting on their asses including the police dept who allows a lot of this shit to happen due to losing faith in the town need to step up. Until that happens Burlington is going to continue to fall apart and get even worse..
Sincerely, no one should want to raise their kids in that shit hole…

NO, U SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELF FOR JUDGING WITHOUT KNOWING THE WHOLE STORY!! STEROETYPING THESE KIDS BECAUSE OF OTHERS! THE PUBLIC IS NOW BULLYING THESE KIDS, THEY ARE BEING TREATED WORSE THAN MURDERS!! THE “VICTIM” IS A KNOWN BULLY! MY FREIND MOVED OUT OF THEIR HOUSE BECAUSE THE “VICTIM” WAS BULLYING THEIR CHILD! THESE CHILDREN THAT ARE BEING PROSECUTED WERE TRYING TO SHOW THE “VICTIM” THAT IT WAS NOT RIGHT SINCE NO ONE ELSE WOULD! I AM NOT SAYING THEY WERE RIGHT, BUT IF THE POLICE, SCHOOL DISTRICT, OR OTHER FIGURES WOULD HAVE STEPPED UP AND HELPED TO STOP THE “VICTIM” FROM BULLYING OTHERS ALL OF THESE YEARS THEN THESE KIDS WOULD NOT HAVE FELT THE NEED TO TAKE IT INTO THEIR OWN HANDS! YOU SHOULD GETS YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT AND LOOK AT THE ‘VICTIMS’ FAMILY! THEY ARE KNOWN DRUG DEALERS AND THEY ARE WHITE!! THE KIDS BEING PROSECUTED ARE NOT FROM THESE TYPE OF FAMILY’S AND HAVE NO CRIMINAL BACKGROUND!

I missed that part. If that’s true then I’m glad that made the video too. I also hope that the four who went to juvenile detention aren’t the only ones learning something from this. Juvenile detention sounds like a lot to me for no more than was shown in the video but certainly there’s a lot more to the story.

I discuss Bullying with my 8 yr.old daughter every night after school. All EVERY parent needs to do is commit 25mins. a week to their children, Every now and then, my daughter will talk about something as little as a friend on the bus teasing her, or someone in the hallway calling her names. Know that I immediately address the situation with school officials. And I will wait at the bus stop and let her driver know.So little effort, so Big results.
