Reed to Hit Code, Nuisance Violations Hard Before Term Ends

EVEN THO HE LOST HIS RE-ELECTION BID, BURLINGTON CITY COUNCILMAN CHRIS REED IS NOT ABOUT TO GIVE UP ON HIS “PET” PROJECT — CLEANING UP BURLINGTON BY CRACKING DOWN ON NUISANCE & CODE VIOLATIONS.

REED HAS DONE SOME RESEARCH AND SAYS OTHER CITIES HAVE TAKEN ACTION, WITH SOME SUCCESS, BY INCREASING FINES 10-FOLD.   REED SAYS MOST VIOLATORS ARE ABSENTEE LANDLORDS AND HE CONCEDES THAT THERE ARE EXCEPTIONS TO EVERY RULE…THE ELDERLY AND THOSE WITH LIMITED INCOMES.   REED AND COUNCILMAN BOB FLEMING BOTH LIKE THE IDEA OF TAKING THE MORE SERIOUS CASES TO SMALL CLAIMS COURT.
