Fast-Moving Storm Hits Burlington…Meep Meep!

IT LEFT A MANGLED SIGN AT THE CRAZY COYOTE ON MT. PLEASANT STREET…AND I GUESS YOU COULD SAY THAT YESTERDAY’S(SUN) STORM CAME THRU BURLINGTON LIKE THE ROADRUNNER.

ONE OF THE HARDEST-HIT SPOTS WAS RANDALL BROWN’S HOUSE AT 529 SOUTH 10TH STREET IN BURLINGTON. HE WAS ON HIS WAY TO WORK AT DOMINO’S PIZZA WHEN THE WINDS CAME UP. HE TRIED TO CALL HIS WIFE MARY…SHE DIDN’T ANSWER…SO HE CALLED ONE OF HIS SONS AND TOLD HIM TO GET DOWNSTAIRS AND TURN ON THE WEATHER. THEN, BROWN CALLED 911…..

NO ONE WAS HURT, BUT THE DAMAGE IS ESTIMATED AT 10- TO 15-THOUSAND DOLLARS. THERE WAS HAIL IN SPOTS…THERE WERE TREES, BRANCHES, LITE POLES AND POWER LINES DOWN IN A NUMBER OF PLACES…POWER WAS KNOCKED OUT IN SOME AREAS…AND JUST THAT FAST, THE STORM WAS GONE.

BY CONTRAST, IN ILLINOIS, SIX PEOPLE WERE KILLED IN TORNADOES AND THE CITY OF WASHINGTON…EAST OF PEORIA…SUFFERED MAJOR DAMAGE, WITH ENTIRE BLOCKS LEVELED BY ONE STORM. ONE PERSON WAS KILLED THERE…THREE OTHERS IN MASSAC COUNTY IN FAR SOUTHERN ILLINOIS…AND TWO IN NEW MINDEN, ALSO IN THE SOUTHERN PART OF THE STATE. GOVERNOR QUINN HAS DECLARED 7 COUNTIES STATE DISASTER AREAS.
