Obituaries Monday November 25th

Garry Thomas, 56, of Burlington, died at 11:33 AM Sunday, November 24, 2013, at his home.  Arrangements are pending at the Thielen Funeral Home & Crematory.

The funeral service for Mrs. Marian Anderson, 94, of New London, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 27th  at Elliott Chapel, New London.  Pastor James Roth will officiate with interment being held in BurgeCemetery, rural New London.  Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday and the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.  In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established for the New London Nursing and RehabCenter.

Father John Whalen, 70, of Burlington, died at Great River Hospice House, West Burlington, Iowa, on Sunday, November 24, 2013.

    

Born on March 27, 1943 in Burlington, Iowa, he was the son of Joseph P. and Marcella A. Whalen.

    

Father Whalen graduated from Notre Dame High School in 1961, St. Ambrose College, Davenport, Iowa, in 1965 and Mount Saint Bernard Seminary, Dubuque, Iowa, with a Master of Divinity in Theology in 1969.

 

He was ordained a priest by Bishop O’Keefe in 1969 at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Davenport. His first Mass was celebrated on June 1, 1969 at St. Paul Catholic Church in Burlington. He served parishes in Keokuk, Davenport, Melcher, Washington, Keswick, Bauer, North English and Parnell. He also had been Director of Vocations from 1973 to 1978 and State Chaplain for the Daughters of Isabella from 1979 to 1983.

 

He is survived by his brother, James M. Whalen of Dunham, Oregon; his sister, Elizabeth Whalen of Green Bay, Wisconsin; eight nieces and nephews; and many cousins.

 

Besides his parents, Father Whalen was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Ellen; her husband Philip Rogers; his sister-in-law, Linda Whalen; and brother-in-law, Steven Duginksi.

 

The family will receive friends on Sunday evening, December 1, 2013 from 5:00 until 7:30 p.m. at St. Paul Catholic Church, Burlington, Iowa, with a prayer service to be held at 7:00 p.m. The family will also receive friends from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. prior to the funeral mass.

    

The Funeral Mass for Rev. John Joseph Whalen will be held on Monday, December 2, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul Catholic Church. Celebrant will be Fr. Marty Goetz. Special music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Burlington, Iowa. Condolences may be left at www.prughfuneralservice.com.

Matilda “Tillie” Ann Cooper, 95 years, of Fort Madison, Iowa died at 7:55 amFriday, November 22, 2013 at the FortMadisonCommunityHospital, Fort Madison, Iowa.  She was born September 27, 1918 at West Point, Iowa, a daughter of Herman H. and Catherine (Nacke) Kuhljuergen.  On November 22, 1938, she married William Conrad Cooper at the SacredHeartChurch, Fort Madison, Iowa.  He preceded her in death on June 23, 1976.

 

She was a lifelong resident of the FortMadison area.  She was a member of the Ladies Catholic Auxiliary, Fort Madison Senior Citizens and the West Point Senior Citizens.  She was a member of the Ss. Mary and Joseph Catholic Church.

 

She is survived by one daughter, Kathleen (husband Robert) Vandenboom, of Aurora, Ohio; one sister, Thelma Thornton, of Lexington, Kentucky; three grandsons, four great grandsons, two nephews and four nieces.  She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son Lt. Col. William Thomas Cooper, two brothers and one sister.

 

Per her wishes, the body will be cremated.  Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 am Friday, November 29, 2013 at the Holy Family Parish, Ss. Mary and Joseph Catholic Church, FortMadison, with FatherMarkSpring, as Celebrant.  Private burial will be at a later date at OaklandCemetery, Fort Madison, Iowa.  A memorial has been established, contributions may be made at the Barr Memorial Chapel, FortMadison.  Online condolences to the Cooper Family may be made from the Barr Memorial Chapel, www.barrmemorialchapel.com.
