WASHINGTON (AP) — A Virginia Emergency Management spokeswoman says a major, incoming storm has the potential to be a “historic ice event” today.
In Tennessee, police in Memphis are urging motorists to stay home altogether this morning if they can. Many roads in the state are icy.
The powerful storm system is aiming at the densely populated Eastern seaboard today and Northeast after that.
Forecasters said the potent system already has blamed for numerous power outages and thousands of weekend flight cancellations.
Icy conditions are expected to last through the weekend from Texas to Ohio to Tennessee. And officials warned a major ice storm was possible along the mountainous border of Virginia along the busy Interstate 81 corridor.
Several deaths are blamed on the weather.
