DMCo Board Backs Mississippi River Initiatives

THE DES MOINES COUNTY BOARD HAS THROWN ITS POLITICAL SUPPORT BEHIND A PAIR OF RELATED RESOLUTIONS — ONE THAT WOULD DESIGNATE THE UPPER MISSISSIPPI RIVER AS A SO-CALLED “MARINE HIWAY”…AND ANOTHER THAT ASKS FOR FEDERAL FUNDING TO UPGRADE & MAINTAIN THE LOCK & DAM SYSTEMS AND OTHER NAVIGATION TOOLS ON THE MISSISSIPPI…ILLINOIS…AND MISSOURI RIVERS.

DAN WIEDEMEIER OF BURLINGTON IS A MEMBER OF A COMMISSION PUSHING FOR THE LEGISLATION THAT WOULD ACCOMPLISH BOTH GOALS.

IOWA CONGRESSMAN DAVE LOEBSACK AND ILLINOIS CONGRESSWOMAN CHERI BUSTOS HAVE CO-SPONSORED LEGISLATION IN THE U-S HOUSE…AND U-S SENATOR CHUCK GRASSLEY SAYS THERE’S BEEN NO CONTROVERSY SURROUNDING THEIR BILL…NOR THE ONE THAT MADE ITS WAY THRU THE U-S SENATE…AND IT’S NOW UP TO A CONFERENCE COMMITTEE TO COMBINE THE TWO AND COME UP WITH SOMETHING BOTH CHAMBERS CAN LIVE WITH.
