New 8-Year Iowa Drivers License Starts Jan. 1st

Beginning January 1st, you’ll be able to renew your drivers license every eight years, instead of five. The new change is designed to save customers time and money as well as the DOT. The yearly fee will not change. It will remain at $4 per year for a noncommercial license, $8 for a commercial, and $2 for a motorcycle endorsement. Not everyone however, is eligible. Carjacking Leads to Child’s Death

CHICAGO (AP) — Authorities say an 11-year-old Chicago boy on his way to get a Christmas haircut with family members is dead after a carjacked vehicle being pursued by police crashed into the family’s car. Donovan Anthony Turnage was a fifth grader. Turnage, his father and brother were on their way to get haircuts on Saturday. Police allege officers on patrol saw an armed carjacking and drove after the car, which crashed into the family’s vehicle. Authorities say the carjacker allegedly stole another vehicle and got away. Hunters Hurt During Final Shotgun Weekend

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Two deer hunters have been injured during the last weekend of shotgun season. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources said Sunday in a news statement that a Madrid man was shot in his elbow by a hunter who was shooting at a deer in Dallas County on Saturday. Fifty-year-old Michael Otto was treated at a Des Moines hospital. A Charles City man also was shot on Saturday near Floyd. Twenty-one-year-old Holden Hillegas was shot in his upper back by another hunter in his party and was treated at a Charles City hospital. Continue Reading

THE UN-NAMED VICTIM WAS TAKEN TO GREAT RIVER MEDICAL CENTER, WHERE HIS CONDITION IS NOT BEING RELEASED, ALTHO POLICE SAY THE INJURIES ARE NOT LIFE-THREATENING. AUTHORITIES FOUND THE SUSPECT…BEN DOCHTERMAN…IN A CAR AT 906 SUMMER STREET.

THE CITY OF BURLINGTON ISSUED ITS FIRST PARKING PROHIBITION ON THE SNOW EMERGENCY ROUTES AT 4:50 YESTERDAY(SUN) MORNING…IT REMAINED IN EFFECT UNTIL 6:27 LAST(SUN) NITE…THE STREETS WERE BUSY WITH LATE SHOPPERS HOPING TO LOCATE BETTER DEALS AND THOSE HARD-TO-FIND ITEMS. CITY POLICE SAY THERE WERE MORE THAN A DOZEN ACCIDENTS…INCLUDING A SNOWPLOW VERSUS A CAR…NO ONE WAS INJURED…AND MORE THAN HALF-A-DOZEN REPORTS OF VEHICLES EITHER STUCK OR DISABLED.

QC Man Arrested for Fatal Hit-and-Run

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) _ Police say the driver who fled the scene of a fatal crash in Davenport has been arrested and charged. Assistant Police Chief Don Schaeffer tells the Quad-City Times that 22-year-old Charles Williams of Davenport was arrested Friday after being released from a hospital.  He is now in the Scott County Jail. Williams has been charged with homicide by vehicle, operating while intoxicated, leaving the scene of a fatal accident and other counts. Police say he fled the December 10th single-car crash that killed his passenger, 47-year-old John Frost of Davenport. Continue Reading

House Explodes NW of Springfield

VIRGINIA, Ill. (AP) _ Fire officials say a home in rural central Illinois exploded but no one was home at the time. The explosion happened in the town of Virginia in Cass County.  Virginia Fire Chief Donnie Reynolds tells WLDS radio in Jacksonville the home exploded around 9:30 p.m. on Friday. Reynolds says he thinks a propane leak filled the home with gas. Continue Reading
