Obituaries Friday January 17th

Ann Lee Thompson, 90 years, of Fort Madison, Iowa died at 10:40 pmWednesday, January 15, 2014 at the FortMadisonCommunityHospital, Fort Madison, Iowa.  She was born October 26, 1923 at Hale, Missouri, a daughter of Lester and Effie Mae (Boley) Woodard.  On July 5, 1942, she married Leon W. Thompson at Unionville, Missouri.  He preceded her in death on September 8, 1998

 

She was a graduate of Mt.PleasantHigh School.  She worked many years at Sheaffer Pen and the Ordinance Plant.  For 10 years, she and her husband, owned and operated Tommy’s Maid-Rite.  She also worked 10 years for Dr. Rashid, and retired in 1985.  She was a member of the First Christian Church. She was a 50 year member of the Eagle’s Auxiliary and was a past Madam President.  She enjoyed bowling, golfing, crafts, and quilting.

 

She is survived by one son, Stephen Thompson, of Fort Madison, Iowa; three daughters: Joyce Thompson, of Fort Madison, Iowa; Janet (husband Dale) Navntoft, of Fort Madison, Iowa; and Sandra Lehrke, of Montrose, Iowa; two sisters, Ruby Smith, of Mesa, Arizona and Donna Kennedy, of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa; ten grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son, Jerry Thompson, one great grandson, Bryson James Clark, two brothers, Billy Jr. Woodard and Howard Wayne Woodard, and three sisters: Audrey Doty, Juanita Tyner, and Margaret Lynn Woodard. 

 

Her body has been cremated.  Family will greet friends from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pmMonday January 20, 2014 at the Barr Memorial Chapel, Fort Madison, Iowa.  Memorial services will be held at 3:00 pmMonday January 20, 2014 at the Barr Memorial Chapel, with Reverend John Simpson officiating.  Private family burial will be held at a later date at the OaklandCemetery, Fort Madison, Iowa.  Memorial contributions have been established, contributions may be left at the Barr Memorial Chapel.  Online condolences to the Thompson family may be made at the Barr Memorial Chapel website, www.barrmemorialchapel.com.

Loren C. “Skip” McDonough, 86, of Davenport, peacefully went to be with His Heavenly Father at 3:45 PM, Wednesday, January 15, 2014, at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf.

 

Born April 25, 1927, in Lacey, IA, he was the son of Jesse Grant and Bertha Mae Pieper McDonough. He was united in marriage to Audrey Louise Williams in November of 1946 in Oskaloosa, IA.  Together they had three daughters. She preceded him in death on September 6, 1961. On June 30, 1962, he married Catherine Louise Nicklas in Muscatine, IA. They were blessed to enjoy many years together until her death on June 14, 2011.

 

Upon graduation from high school, Skip went in to the Navy, where he served during WWII as a communications expert.  He was extremely honored to be able to participate in an honor flight to Washington D.C. in 2009.

 

After attending Western Union Academy, he was assigned to offices in Ottumwa, Oskaloosa, Burlington and Des Moines.  He worked for Western Union for 36 years as a operations manager and technical services coordinator, retiring in 1985 while in Des Moines. After retirement, he and his wife, Catherine, returned to Burlington to enjoy their family and friends.

 

Skip enjoyed his life.  In his younger years he was actively involved in the Jaycees, loved to square dance, and played on various softball teams.  Later he coached his grandchildren in sports.  He excelled as an armchair “coach” rooting his beloved Cubs and Iowa Hawkeyes on.  He was an active member of Parkside First Baptist Church where he had served as a Deacon and on many church boards.  He had served on board for Jr. Chamber Commerce in Oskaloosa  for eight years where he was Board of Director, a member of CWA-AFL-CIO for 36 years, and was also a member of Credit Union for 15 years in Des Moines.  He loved his family and country, but especially his God and he had taught his family to do the same.

 

Survivors include three daughters, Linda  Jones of Davenport, Mary (David) McNutt of Surprise, AZ, and Judy (Don) Mackey of Davenport; eight grandchildren, Scott (Heather) McNutt, Tracey (Dan) Harrison, Andrew (Christine) McNutt, Dawn Mackey, Heather (Rory) Niebuhr, Ryan Mackey, LeAnn (David) Claussen, Jason (Theresa) Jones; 14 great-grandchildren, Taylor, Michael, Hunter, Lauren, Abigail, Nolan, Reagan, Makayla, Aaron, Brady, Tyler, Kyle, Rylie, and Peyton; one sister, Phyllis Fry of Beacon, IA; and numerous nieces and nephew.

 

Besides both of his wives, he was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Max, Elvin, and Paul, and one sister, Georgena.

 

The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until noon Friday, January 17, 2014 at the Harvest Bible Chapel, 3800 East 53rd Street in Davenport.

 

The funeral service for Mr. McDonough will be at noon, Friday, January 17, 2014, at Harvest Bible Chapel, 3800 East 53rd Street in Davenport with Pastors Kip Hamby and Marshall Jackman officiating.  Burial will be in Rock Island National Cemetery.

 

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for Parkside First Baptist Church, 300 Potter Drive, Burlington, IA 52601.
