New Scams Target Computer Owners, Ameren Customers

A COUPLE MORE SCAMS ARE MAKING THEIR WAY THRU THE AREA…..

WARREN COUNTY(IL) SHERIFF MARTIN EDWARDS SAYS SOMEONE WITH AN ACCENT HAS BEEN CALLING PEOPLE, TELLING THEM HE’S WITH A WELL-KNOWN SOFTWARE COMPANY AND WANTS TO DO A COMPUTER SECURITY CHECK. THE VICTIM IS THEN DIRECTED TO ACCOMPLISH SOME TASKS ON THEIR COMPUTER THAT WILL GIVE THE CALLER ACCESS. ABOUT TWO MONTHS LATER, THE VICTIM RECEIVES BANK STATEMENTS THAT SHOW UNAUTHORIZED DEBITS FROM THEIR ACCOUNT. AUTHORITIES AGREE YOU SHOULD NEVER GIVE OUT PERSONAL INFORMATION OR ACCESS TO IT, UNLESS YOU’VE INITIATED THE CONTACT YOURSELF WITH SOMEONE YOU KNOW AND TRUST.

IN ANOTHER CURRENT CON, SOMEONE IS SENDING OUT PHONY E-MAILS THAT APPEAR TO BE REQUESTS FROM AMEREN…ILLINOIS AND MISSOURI…TO PAY UNPAID UTILITY BILLS. RECIPIENTS ARE INSTRUCTED TO OPEN A VIRUS-INFECTED ATTACHMENT. AMEREN SECURITY DIRECTOR TIM REAGAN SAYS ALTHO THE UTILITY DOES OCCASIONALLY SEND E-MAILS, THEY NEVER INCLUDE ATTACHMENTS.
