Man Attempts to Cross Mississippi River on Ice

He is lucky to be alive. That’s what Burlington’s Battalion Chief Bruce Workman had to stay about the call he received earlier today…

“I was notified by our dispatch that there was a person out on the ice and that he was going to Illinois, but was coming back . I went down to the river and met him. I told him there wasn’t much chance of us helping him should he fall through the ice halfway across the river.”

Workman said the man didn’t want to give his name, but he seemed to be in his late 50’s and is a resident of Fort Madison. He also noted that the man didn’t SEEM to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

According to Workman, the man walked 3 quarters of the way across the river, between the bridge and the Port of Burlington, before walking back to the shore.
