BFD Chief Says Supplemental Heating Requires Caution

AREA FIREFIGHTERS WERE BUSY OVER THE WEEKEND, KNOCKING DOWN HOUSE FIRES IN BURLINGTON…FORT MADISON…NEAR OQUAWKA AND IN LOUISA COUNTY.

…..AND WHILE WINTER IS HISTORICALLY A BIG SEASON FOR FIRES, BURLINGTON CHIEF MATT TREXEL SAYS A LOT OF WHAT HE’S SEEN SO FAR THIS YEAR HAS BEEN CAUSED BY SUPPLEMENTAL HEATING — LIKE STOVE-TOPS & OVENS.

WOOD-STOVES HAVE BECOME VERY POPULAR…ESPECIALLY IN THE COUNTRY…AND TREXEL SAYS THEY TOO ARE OFTEN USED IN THE WRONG WAY. TREXEL…BY THE WAY…DOES NOT THINK THOSE CHIMNEY-CLEANING LOGS DO A VERY GOOD JOB; HE RECOMMENDS A CHIMNEY-SWEEP WITH A LONG BRUSH.
AND LAST…BUT NOT LEAST…NO MATTER WHAT YOU’RE USING FOR HEAT, PICK UP SOME SMOKE DETECTORS.  IF YOU DON’T HAVE SMOKE DETECTORS AND CAN’T AFFORD THEM, YOU CAN CALL THE BURLINGTON FIRE DEPARTMENT AND THEY’LL PROVIDE YOU WITH SOME, FREE-OF-CHARGE. THEY’LL EVEN INSTALL THEM IN THE RIGHT PLACES.
