Kimberly Kay Duque, 54, of Burlington, Iowa, died at her home on Saturday, February 1, 2014.

    

Born on March 15, 1959 in Pontiac, Illinois, she was the daughter of Gerald W. Smith and Judith Day. 

 

Kim served in the United States Air Force from 1980 – 1983 under honorable conditions with the rank of E4, Senior Airman. She lived in Germany with her family on a military base from 1988-1992. Following her military service she pursued a career with the Burlington Police Department. While at the police academy she was injured and unable to continue that career.

From there she went to the Probation Office and worked with the Batter’s Education Dept. Kim served on the Batter’s Education Program Advisory Board and worked closely (advocate) for domestic violence victims and shelters. She facilitated groups with youthful offenders and assisted with policies, procedures and curriculum development. She was a receiver of the Team Excellence Award for Moms in the program for women. She worked for the Batter’s Education Program for 16 years, retiring in 2011. Kim was a dedicated employee and her work with the BEP was highly valued by her peers and community.

Kim was actively involved with raising her granddaughter, Kyler and served on the PTO for her school. She was also very involved with Kyler’s swim team and they both volunteered at the Humane Society. Kim was a devoted mother to Sarra and Nico and was a wonderful grandmother to Kyler, Rowan and Raigan.

Kim’s greatest joys were spending time with her family, taking her parents to appointments, planning birthday parties and get-togethers. At home Kim enjoyed flowers, birds, cats and her computer. Away from home, caring for others was a high priority; it made her happy and kept her involved. Kim also supported her daughter Sarra in her road to recovery, always providing the hope and faith she needed.

She passed away peacefully in her sleep. Her family will honor her and carry on her legacy of caring for others, her wonderful hugs and contagious laughter.

 

She is survived by her father and step-mother, Gerald (Emily) Smith of Ft. Madison, Iowa; her mother, Judith Smith McCulloch of Burlington, Iowa; one daughter, Sarra Duque of Burlington, Iowa; one son, Nico Duque of Chicago, Illinois; three granddaughters, Kyler, Rowan and Raigan; two sisters, Michelle (Ken Helling) Russell of Burlington, Iowa and Kristy Dillon of Austin, Texas; one brother, Mitch (Joni) Smith of Cumming, Georgia; several nieces, Jami (Shaun), Ashley, Aly (Ryan), and Samantha; great-nieces and nephews, Ryan, Chloe, Logan, Caden, Irys, Johanna, Hazel and Jacoby.

    

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, George &Vera Day and Roy Smith & Bessie Graves; step-grandfather, Robert McCulloch; niece Kristal Smith.

    

The family will receive friends at Prugh’s Chapel on Wednesday, February 5, 2014 from 4:00 until 6:30 p.m. with military rites conducted at 6:30 p.m. by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard. Cremation has been entrusted to Prugh Funeral Service. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for the Des Moines County Animal Shelter.      Mary Eleanor Ward, 86, of Burlington, Iowa, died at Prairie Ridge Care & Rehab, Mediapolis, Iowa, on Sunday, February 2, 2014.

     Mary was born in Creston, Iowa, on October 26, 1927, the daughter of William R. and Jessie M. (Noble) Ward. She graduated from CrestonSenior High School in 1944. She continued her education atOttumwaHeightsCollege & CrestonCollege then received her BA at Drake. She earned a 2 year degree in teaching then a Masters at the University of Illinois.

     Mary’s first teaching job was in a consolidated school in Story County, Iowa. From there she became a second grade teacher at SunnysideSchool in Burlington. While studying at the University of Iowa, she was selected as a special teacher to assist teachers in southeast Iowa with the special education curriculum. She then became a special education teacher at WashingtonSchooland later Oak Street Junior High. During this time she became the Director of Special Education for the Burlington Schools. In 1987 she was assigned Principal of Black Hawk Elementary School until 1995 when she retired. She was a member of the Altrusa Club since 1970, holding many positions, attending district conferences and even attending two International Conferences.

     Mary and her companion, Ruth Buehler had a wonderful life , having lived together for over 60 years. They loved their home on Madison Ave. and the work it entailed in caring for the yard, garden and entertaining. Bridge was at the top of the game list. They avid sports fans Greyhounds, Black Hawks and the Hawkeyes.

     Always wanting to be busy, she liked latch hook, counting stitches, writing and putting scrap books together  for everyone and everything.

     Mary and Ruth traveled a lot and after retiring , enjoyed using their time shares to spend more time  in one location, Branson, MO, which was their favorite. The cruises were also special. Prior to 2006 they spent the last six winters in Florida.

     Mary volunteered at the BurlingtonHospital delivering meals. She was a member of SS. John & Paul Catholic Church since 1941.

     Mary is survived by her sister, Margaret Baker of St. Edward, NE; sister-in-law, Radine Ward of Creston, IA; her companion, Ruth Buehler; four nieces and nephews, Ann Adams of Lincoln, NE, Bruce Ward of Ft. Calhoun, NE, Debbie Dannelly of St. Edward, NE and Doug Baker of Wheatland, WY; three generations of great-nieces and great-nephews; many other relatives and friends.

      She was preceded in death by her parents. She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, James, Robert and Edward; brother-in-law, Larry; two sister-in-laws, Margaret and Virginia. 

     The funeral mass for Mary Ward will be held on Wednesday, February 5 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul Catholic Church, Burlington, Iowa. Fr. Marty Goetz will be the Celebrant. Special music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir. Interment will be in CalvaryCemetery, Creston, Iowa on Thursday February 6, 2014 at 11:30 a.m. The family will receive friends at St. Paul Catholic Church one hour prior to the funeral mass. Memorials have been established for SS. John & Paul Catholic Church and the Burlington Education Foundation. Condolences may be left at www.prughfuneralservice.com.
