OBITS for Monday Feb. 24th, 2014

Robert Leroy Hand, 70, of Burlington, died at 1:20 AM Wednesday, February 19, 2014, in Marco Island, FL.

Born January 19, 1944, in Burlington, IA, he was the son of Kenneth Leroy and Alberta Edna Warner Hand. On December 31, 1986, he married Sally Jo Schwerin in McAllen, TX.

Bob worked at Winegard Company for 47 years and retired as the purchasing manager.

He was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge #579, Fraternal Order of the Eagles Burlington Aerie 150, and the Carthage Lake Club.  He was a longtime volunteer at Community Field with the Burlington Bees.  He was an avid “Wait Until Next Year” fan of the Chicago Cubs, the Green Bay Packers, and Iowa Hawkeye football.  He was an avid duck hunter in his earlier years and enjoyed fishing and traveling.  

Survivors include his wife, Sally; one step-son, Chad (Jenny) Carter of Ankeny and one step-daughter, Jolie (John) Boich of Cottage Grove, MN; six grandchildren, Kahlen, Peyton, and Hayden Boich, Abigail, Marina and Brady Carter; one sister, Nancy Pilger of Burlington; one Aunt, Maxine Warner of Burlington; and one sister-in-law, Peggy (Otis) Shipley of Carman, IL; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.

Visitation will be from 8:00 AM until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Friday, February 28, 2014, at Thielen Funeral Home.

The funeral service for Mr. Hand will be 10:00 AM Saturday, March 1, 2014, at Thielen Funeral Home with Chaplain Randy Gearhart officiating.  Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.  A time of food and fellowship will be held at the Fraternal Order of the Eagles Burlington Aerie 150 following the burial.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for Friends of Community Field.

Mrs. Elenore Mae Budde Pugh, formerly of New London and Mt. Union,  died Saturday, February 22, 2014 at Good Samaritan in Ottumwa.  Her body has been cremated and there will be no formal services at this time.  Memorials may be sent to Good Samaritan Serenity Glen Unit or Good Samaritan Home Care and Hospice.
