The Burlington Bees beat the Southeastern Community College Blackhawks 5-2 in a 6-inning exhibition game last night.
SCC resumes its season today at Muscatine, while it’s “Meet the Bees” night at the PZAZZ Convention Center. Admission is $10 for adults and $8 for those younger than 12. New Bees Manager Bill Richardson will speak and fans can meet and get autographs from the players. The Bees begin their regular season on the road tomorrow night in Beloit and their home opener is next Tuesday night against the Bowling Green Hotrods. (You can hear all the action on KBUR.)
Also on the local sports schedule today, the IWC women’s softball team hosts Cornell College in a double-header.
In girls high school track, Fairfield won the Class A Falcon Relays at West Burlington. They were followed by Washington, Central Lee, Mediapolis, Keokuk and the host team, West Burlington-Notre Dame. In Class B, Pekin dominated, followed by West Central, Danville, Winfield-Mt. Union, New London, Harmony and the WB-ND jayvees. Mt. Pleasant, a late entry in the competition, competed against itself in “Class C.” Mt. Pleasant’s Mary Wester broke a 26-year old record in the shotput, with a toss of 41 feet.
Elsewhere, Louisa-Muscatine swept the boys and girls team titles at the Wapello Co-ed Relays.
In tennis, the Notre Dame-West Burlington girls edged Keokuk 5-4.
In golf, New London’s boys and girls swept Columbus.
In softball, Illini West beat West Central 7-5 and West Hancock dominated Bushnell-Prairie City 15-nothing.
In baseball, it was Illini West over West Central 10-2.
