Carolyn J. Waddell, 83 of Burlington, Iowa, formerly of Raritan, Illinois, died at 4:00 p.m.Sunday April 13, 2014 at SunnyBrookAssistedLivingCenter in Burlington. She was born August 28, 1930 near Media, Illinois, the daughter of Robert J. and Martha Ethel Haines Harden. On May 5, 1952, She married Hershell Waddell in Raritan.

Mrs. Waddell was a retired teacher. She graduated from MediaHigh School and WesternIllinoisUniversity in Macomb. Her teaching career began at the StanleyCountrySchool near Raritan. She then taught in Oquawka, Illinois, Media-WeverSchool District, and finally, Southern School District in Stronghurst, where she taught until her retirement. She and her husband also owned and operated Waddell’s Café in Raritan for several years. She was a member of the Henderson County Retired Teachers Association and the RaritanBaptistChurch. Her favorite hobbies included reading, gardening, scrap booking, and crafts.

Survivors include her husband, one daughter- Nanette (David) House of Burlington, two sons- Monte (Sally) Waddell of Stronghurst, Marty Waddell of Media, four grandchildren, Brandon (Lori) Bell, Blake Bell, Kerri (Phil) Hart, Kimberley Waddell, four great grandchildren, Eli and Grace Bell, Annie and Claire Hart, one sister, Alta Mae (Lawrence) Brokaw of Raritan, and one brother, Duane (Norma) Harden of Stronghurst. She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Adalee Melloan.

Friends may call as they desire after 3:00 p.m.Thursday, April 17, 2014 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst. The family will receive friends from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m.Friday, April 18, 2014, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 at Banks & Beals. Burial will be in the RaritanCemetery.
