Hershell C. Waddell, 85 of Burlington, Iowa, formerly of Raritan, Illinois, died at 8:58 p.m. Sunday May 4, 2014 at Sunny Brook Assisted Living Center in Burlington. He was born November 25, 1928 in Cave City, Kentucky, the son of Jake and Nora Sell Waddell. On May 5, 1952, he married Carolyn Jane Harden in Raritan. She preceded him in death on April 13, 2014.
Mr. Waddell was educated in Louisville, KY. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict, and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal. He lived most of his adult life in Raritan, where he and his wife owned and operated Waddell’s Café for many years. He also served as Raritan Township Road Commissioner for twenty years. He served on the Raritan Volunteer Fire Department for many years, was a member of the Stronghurst American Legion, and was a 50 year member of the Roseville, Illinois Masonic Lodge. He was also a member of the Raritan Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter- Nanette (David) House of Burlington, two sons- Monty (Sally) Waddell of Stronghurst, Marty Waddell of Media, four grandchildren, Brandon (Lori) Bell, Blake Bell, Kerri (Phil) Hart, Kimberly Waddell, four great grandchildren, Eli and Gracie Bell, Annie and Claire Hart, and two sisters- Maxine and Caroline, both of the Louisville, KY area. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and three brothers- Ballard, Russell, and Shelby Waddell.
Friends may call as they desire after 3:00 p.m. Wednesday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst. The funeral service for Mr. Waddell will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday May 8, 2014 at Banks & Beals, with Greg McClintock officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Burial, with military rites, will be in the Raritan Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established for the Raritan Volunteer Fire Department. Condolences may be left at banksandbeals.com.
