WIU Students Arrested for Hazing

Western Illinois

Seven Western Illinois University students have been charged with hazing.

On May 2nd Macomb Police responded to 301 N. Johnson Street where they had a complaint of an intoxicated man. When officers arrived, they found him to be non-responsive and had a dangerously high blood alcohol level. He was taken to McDonough District Hospital and was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit.

After an investigation, authorities determined his condition was due to a hazing incident involving the WIU Rugby team. During the hazing incident, team members were made to consume large amounts of alcohol in a very short time span, and the victim had passed out at the residence.

Arrested on Friday for hazing were 23-year-old Lucas Sgarlata, 21-year-old Aiden Belcher, 24-year-old John Landes, 19-year-old Bradley Basala, 20-year-old Jack Lord, and 22-year-old Kevin Campion.

A warrant has been issued for the arrest of 20-year-old Steven Schroeder, but police think the student has gone home because the semester is over.
