Obituaries Friday May 16th

Dorothy Elaine Dean, 80, of Mediapolis, died at 3:30 PM Wednesday, May 14, 2014, at the Prairie Ridge Care & Rehabilitation in Mediapolis.

Born February 8, 1934, in Columbus City, IA, she was the daughter of Harlan Clinton and Lucy Pauline Hanft Fletcher. On June 24, 1950, she married Delbert Allen Dean in Iowa City.

Dorothy worked at Sylvania for four years and then was a school bus driver for the Mediapolis Community School for 25 years. For the past 36 years she has been a rural mail carrier for the Burlington U.S. Postal Service.

She was of the Methodist faith and spent many years as a Sunday school teacher. She was a volunteer with the Boy Scouts of America and Assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 53 and Troop 57. She was a member of the Silver Tomahawk Lodge 80 where she was known as Silver Dove. She loved camping and baking cookies for everyone. She loved cooking dinners every Sunday evening for all of her family. She dearly loved her dog, Duke that she met on her mail route.

Survivors include her husband, Delbert of Mediapolis; one son, Larry Dean of Burlington; and one daughter, Brenda Schwerin of Mediapolis; five grandchildren; Matthew Dean, Jeff Dean, Martha Dean, Skyler Schwerin, and Emily Schwerin; two great-grandchildren, Greyson Dean, and Harlan Schwerin; one sister, Linda Fletcher of KS; and one aunt, Lillian Fletcher of Wapello; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother. Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Thielen Crematory.

A celebration of her life will be at a later date. Inurnment will be in Kossuth Cemetery, Mediapolis.

David D. Anderson, 63, of Burlington, died at 11:00 AM Wednesday, May 14, 2014, at his home.

Born May 13, 1951, in Burlington, he was the son of Francis Peter and Mary Elizabeth Collett Anderson. On June 23, 2001, he married Karen S. Schwerin in Burlington.

David was a machinist at General Electric for 37 years. He retired in 2007. He was a 1969 graduate of Burlington High School.

He loved Mopar muscle cars, fishing, camping, home remodeling, racing, boating, spending time with family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchild.

Survivors include his wife, Karen; two sons, Jeff (Leanne) Allen of Sperry, IA, and Justin (Christen) Allen of Elkhart, IN; one daughter, Tara (Michael) Lane of Neenah, WI; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; five brothers, Jim (Linda) Anderson of West Burlington, Robert (Barbara) Anderson of Burlington, Roger (Sandy) Anderson of Indianapolis, IN, Dean (Judy) Anderson of Burlington, and Jerry (Sherry) Anderson of Burlington; and 13 nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Donnie Anderson, one sister, Lois Anderson, and one nephew, Donnie Anderson.

Visitation will be from noon until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Friday, May 16, 2014, at Thielen Funeral Home.

The funeral service for Mr. Anderson will be 1:00 PM Saturday, May 17, 2014, at Thielen Funeral Home with Reverend Dean Graber officiating. Cremation will be entrusted to the care of Thielen Crematory following the service.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for the Des Moines County Humane Society.

Rosemary Ann Cash, 86 years, of West Point, Iowa and formerly of Houghton, Iowa died at 5:50 am Thursday, May 15, 2014 at the West Point Care Center, West Point, Iowa. She was born June 27, 1927, a daughter of Alois & Marie (Pomberg) Hellweg. On November 23, 1974, she married Maurice Cash at Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He preceded her in death May 5, 1985.

She was born and raised in Houghton, Iowa, and graduated from St. John’s Catholic High School. She attended college in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where she lived for 63 years. She taught school for many years, then worked as an interior decorator for J.C. Penny. She moved back to Iowa in 2008. She enjoyed her family and friends, doing puzzles, playing bingo and cards, and listening to music and sports. Especially the Milwaukee Brewers and Green Bay Packers, however since moving back to Iowa, she followed the Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears.

She is survived by her two sisters: Alvera (husband Gene) Merschman, of St. Paul, Iowa and Lucille (husband Gary) Olson, of Houghton, Iowa; one brother, Carl (wife LaVina) Hellweg, of Houghton, Iowa and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one brother, Joseph Hellweg, one sister, Clarice Abolt, and one nephew, Mike Abolt.

Per her wishes, her body has been cremated. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am Monday, May 19, 2014 at the St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Houghton, Iowa, with Father Bruce DeRammelaere as Celebrant. Burial will be at St. John’s Cemetery, Houghton, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, St. James the Less Catholic Church, and St. Mary’s of the Assumption Catholic Church. Contributions may be made at the church during the service or at the Barr-Holtkamp Funeral Home, West Point.
